Emmaus 41, Pleasant Valley 0

RECAP >> Visiting Pleasant Valley ran twice as many plays as Emmaus on Friday night but it hardly mattered to the one number that counted the most on the scoreboard.

Despite holding a 62-31 advantage in total plays, the winless Bears were no match as the Hornets entertained a large crowd that gathered on Lower Macungie Youth Association (LMYA) at East Penn School District Stadium cruising to an easy 41-0 victory.

Junior Brandon Camire scored three touchdowns for the fourth consecutive week, and fellow junior Jacob Moyer tossed three more touchdown passes as Emmaus did all its scoring in the first and third quarters in improving to 3-1 on the season. The Hornets also shutout Pleasant Valley for the second consecutive year (56-0 last year).

Camire, who had rushed for 200+ yards in his last three games, carried the ball just nine times but still ran for 115 yards against a Pleasant Valley team that had given up an average of 58 points in its first three games. His three touchdown runs of 23, 21 and 39 gave him 14 for the season.

Moyer, coming off a three-touchdown passing effort in his first varsity start in last week’s 49-21 win over Whitehall, had another solid game under center as he completed 9 of 12 for a career-high 179 yards and three scores. His three touchdown passes went to three different receivers.

Junior wideout Jameel Sanders had over 100 yards for the first time in his career (110) on just two catches, including an 83-yard touchdown pass from Moyer that pushed the score to 41-0 in the third quarter, enforcing the mercy rule.

Senior Bryan Bertsch had four catches on the night and caught his first career touchdown pass on a 5-yard score in the first quarter, and classmate Adam Heiserman hauled in his first touchdown of the season on a 23-yard pass in the third quarter.

Ben Thomas, a sophomore, also saw varsity action for the first time in the fourth quarter and completed both of his pass attempts for 19 yards.

Emmaus will return to action next Friday at 7 p.m. as they travel to Cottingham Stadium to take on unbeaten Easton. The Red Rovers improved to 4-0 on the season after crushing Liberty 44-7 last night. The game will be carried Live on Penn Sports Radio beginning with the pregame show at 6:30 p.m.

Emmaus 49, Whitehall 21

RECAP >> The moment certainly wasn’t too big for Jacob Moyer.

Making his first career varsity start at quarterback, Moyer went out and shined in his debut under center at Whitehall on Friday night as he tossed three touchdown passes leading Emmaus to its best overall effort to date in a 49-21 pounding of the Zephyrs.

Moyer, the backup to starter Alex Lanzone who suffered a shoulder injury late in last week’s loss to Nazareth, may have locked down the starting position moving forward with a solid effort leading the Hornets offense up-and-down the field all night against a porous Whitehall defense that had given up a combined 87 points through the first two games of the season.

Moyer hooked up with junior wideout Jameel Sanders on a pair of scoring strikes of 48 and 9 yards with the first coming on Moyer’s first pass of the game on the Hornets opening possession.

The victory by Emmaus helped them improve to 2-1 as they got the sour taste of last week’s home-opening loss to Nazareth out of their mouths. It was also the second consecutive year that the Hornets have defeated the Zephyrs and fourth in the last five meetings. Whitehall, coached by former Emmaus assistant Matt Senneca, remained winless on the season as they dropped to 0-3.

Hornets running back Brandon Camire had yet another big night in the backfield as he scored three more touchdowns on runs of 11, 68 and 60 yards, and finished with 208 yards marking the third consecutive game that the junior has eclipsed 200+ yards. In just three games, Camire already has 11 touchdowns on the season.

Sanders also had a big night for Emmaus with his first two touchdowns of the season to go along with a career-high 60 yards on the ground on just three carries.

Sophomore Jared Groller scored his third career touchdown on a 25-yard run in the first quarter that gave Emmaus a quick 14-0 lead and junior wide receiver Chad Newhard caught his third touchdown of the season on a 12-yard pass from Moyer, the Hornets only score of the second half.

Defensively, Emmaus had its best performance of the season as they held Whitehall to just 277 yards of total offense. Senior linebacker Adam Heiserman led the Hornets with a team-high 8 tackles and one sack. Groller was next with 7 tackles and a sack.

Whitehall senior running back Ali Barkley, the brother of current New York Giants running back Saquon Barkley, finished with 174 yards on the ground and two touchdowns, half of those yards came in the second quarter on 83-yard touchdown run that got the Zephyrs to within 28-14.

Emmaus will return home to East Penn School District Stadium next Friday as they host winless Pleasant Valley (0-3). Penn Sports Radio will have all the action beginning with the pregame show at 6:30 p.m. followed by the opening kickoff at 7 p.m.

Coach Fairclough on the win: “It’s awesome. Our guys did a great job of responding (following last week’s loss). We’re a young team and it’s going to be a process. We have to learn how to handle a little bit of success. Believe it or not, we still made a lot of mistakes, but we’ll watch the film and we’ll enjoy this one and clean up those mistakes moving forward.”

On Jacob Moyer: “I told him before the game to just go out and there and have fun and sling the thing and he did that. It looked like he was having a ball out there and he got it done for us tonight.”

Nazareth 36, Emmaus 24

RECAP – Visiting Nazareth outscored Emmaus 22-3 in the second half and took advantage of three turnovers as the Blue Eagles spoiled the home opener for the Hornets by rallying for 36-24 win on Friday night at East Penn School District Stadium.

Nazareth senior wide receiver Nathan Stefanik did it all as he scored a pair of touchdowns and also had three interceptions on defense, while fellow senior quarterback Anthony Harris threw for two scores as the Blue Eagles improved to 2-0 on the season.

For Emmaus (1-1), running back Brandon Camire had his second consecutive 200+ yard game as he ran for 206 yards and two touchdowns. The junior had scores of 82, 3 and 85 yards and ran for 197 yards in the first half, but was limited to just 9 yards in the second half on 8 carries.

Senior wide receiver Johnny Ferris had a career-high 73 yards on four receptions for the Hornets who had three turnovers.

Nazareth halted a three-game losing streak to Emmaus by picking up its first win against the Hornets since 2016 (41-21).

Emmaus will look to bounce back as they travel to Whitehall next Friday to take on the Zephyrs (0-2).

Hornets to host Nazareth in district opener Friday at EPSD Stadium

Emmaus and Nazareth played one of the most memorable games of the high school regular-season back on August 31 when the Hornets overcame a 15-point deficit to rally for a wild 43-42 win at the Blue Eagles Andrew S. Leh Stadium.

Now nearly two months later, the two teams will meet again, but this time, much more will be on the line and the site will change with East Penn School District Stadium being the host.

The District XI committee announced its match-ups late on Saturday night for its upcoming post-season tournament, and Emmaus was awarded the No. 2 seed in the eight-team Class 6A field and quarterfinal round home game against seventh-seeded Nazareth  at 7 p.m. on Friday.

Head coach Harold Fairclough's team wrapped up a 9-1 regular-season on Friday night following its thrilling 35-31 come-from-behind win over rival Parkland.

The Hornets also claimed a share of the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference South Division championship thanks to Liberty's 29-10 upset win over previously-undefeated Freedom. It was the second division title in the last three years for the Hornets.

Emmaus will be making its third-straight appearance in the district playoffs and its sixth since 2004.

The Hornets have had their season end at the hands of Freedom the past two years at EPSD Stadium with the Patriots prevailing in last year's quarterfinals (26-15) and in the semifinals in 2016 (42-12).

Emmaus' last win in the district playoffs came two years ago at home when they defeated Liberty 23-13. The program's only other win in districts was back in 2008, a 28-0 win over Delaware Valley at EPSD Stadium.

Look for a preview of the Hornets match-up with Nazareth later this week on Emmaussports.com.

Week 2 notes: Emmaus vs Nazareth

How it happened: Emmaus overcame a 15-point deficit (21-6) in the second quarter to rally for a wild 43-42 win as they scored the game-winning TD with just :09 left in regulation and converted the ensuing two-point conversion for the win....The Hornets are 2-0 on the season for the second time since 2016....Emmaus won despite a number of dropped passes, missed opportunities and being penalized 11 times for 115 yards.

The visiting team won in the series for the fifth straight year and Emmaus picked up its second straight win at Nazareth with last year's contest featuring a combined 97 points with the Hornets prevailing 55-42. The Blue Eagles won at Emmaus in 2016 (41-21) and 2015 (49-36).

Coach Fairclough: "[We found a way to win this game] and that's what it's all about. We knew we might have some trouble with their offense and that's kinda how it played out. We had our ups and downs and we made a lot of mistakes. At halftime, we told this kids that this was probably our worst half of football that I've ever seen and we were down just eight points. We remained positive, kept working and chipping away and it paid dividends in the end."

"A lot of guys stepped up tonight; a lot of guys that never played varsity before. This was a huge game and my hat goes off to these guys. They love playing for each other and it showed. It's a fun group to be around."

Parvel the playmaker:: One week after accounting for 3 TDs in the Hornets season-opening win over Allen, senior QB Ethan Parvel did one better as he had a hand in 4 of his team's 6 TDs, throwing for 3  and running for another, including a wild scramble in the waning seconds of the game, finding a wide open Izaiah McPherson who made a diving catch in the end zone.

Fairclough: "I think he (Parvel) felt a sense of urgency to get the ball out. He knew he couldn't go down there. He just flipped it and I think Izaiah stopped his route, then started again and saw the ball coming and then decided to catch it. It was an amazing play."

More Myers: With running mate Sone Ntoh sidelined early in the game with a leg/calf injury, senior Lubens Myers stood tall for the Hornets as he scored the game-winning, two-point conversion. The senior also returned the opening kickoff 94 yards for a score and accounted for two TDs. For the game, Myers rushed for 127 yards on a career-high 27 carries.

Fairclough: "He wasn't going to be denied on the [two-point] play. He was running hard ad he's a on a mission this year. He missed a lot of time last year and he's playing with a chip on his shoulder and I love to see that. He was all over the field - offense, defense, special teams. He wants it and I'm proud of him. "

Johnny Be Good: Playing in his first varsity game, junior WR Johnny Ferris played a key role in the win with an amazing 24-yard TD catch in the back of the end zone for his first career TD early in the fourth quarter. Ferris also had a key 8-yard catch late in the game to keep another drive alive.

Fairclough: "We love him. Johnny on the spot. He catches the ball all the time. We had no problem putting him in there. He made a great catch on the touchdown and he also had a great catch near the sideline later in the game to keep a drive alive. He just stepped up big time."

Defensive leaders: Through the first two games of the season, senior LB Tim Higgins leads the team with 12 tackles (10 solo), while fellow senior DL Jacob Wieder is second (10) and senior DB Carlton Lovett is third (8)

Injury update: Hornets senior RB Sone Ntoh left the game early in the second quarter with a leg/calf injury and didn't return. Said Fairlcough on Tuesday:  He's 'definitely getting better, but it's still day to day.' The Harvard-bound Ntoh had just one carry for four yards before leaving the game.

What's up next: Emmaus will return to EPSD Stadium on Friday to host Whitehall on East Penn Emmaus Midget Football Association (EPEMFA) Night ....The Zephyrs enter the contest 0-2 after an opening-season loss to East Stroudsburg South (37-28) and last week's defeat to Easton (55-21) in which the Zephyrs were outscored 35-7 in the second half after only trailing by six (20-14) at the break....There will be plenty of intrigue around this game as Parvel goes against his former team...

Week 1 notes: Emmaus vs Allen

Emmaus opened its 2018 season on a warm and muggy night at East Penn School District Stadium last Friday by rolling to a 62-6 rout over Allen on Lower Macungie Youth Association Night.

The Hornets won on opening night for the fifth straight season and defeated Allen for the eighth straight time and for the 11th time in the last 12 meetings dating back to 2000. It marked the second consecutive season that Emmaus scored 62 points in their first game (2017: Emmaus 62, Dieruff 19).

How it happened: Emmaus wasted little time on getting on the scoreboard as they received the opening kickoff and needed just three plays to find the end zone. Allen responded by scoring its only touchdown of the game on the ensuing possession, but after that it was all Hornets as they scored 55 unaswered points with seven different players scoring touchdowns.

Coach Fairclough: "We just wanted to play fast today which I think we accomplished. Offensively, we were very fast. We got to the ball and pushed tempo like we wanted to. The second thing we wanted to do is play smart. We had a couple of bad penalties and a couple of alignment breakdowns and that's stuff we have to work on in that area. We also wanted to be the most physical team on the field tonight and and every night, and at points we were and sometimes we weren't. Again things to work on. Overall it's a great win and we'll take it. Wins are hard to come by in this league but we'll take every one we can get."

Parvel paves way to 3 TDs in debut: Parvel, who transferred from Whitehall last spring, played the first half and the first series of the third quarter in his first career start at Emmaus. The senior ran for a 6-yard TD score in the first quarter and then threw a pair of TDs in the second -- one to senior Deonte Castro for 13 yards; the other a 10-yard pass to senior Carlton Lovett. On the night, the 6' 1" signalcaller completed 5 of 8 for 80 yards and also rushed four times for 32 yards.

Ntoh-ing his way to a milestone: Needing just five yards to reach 2,000 rushing yards for his career, senior Sone Ntoh did just that on his first carry of the game as he ran for 8 yards. On the night, the Harvard-bound Ntoh rushed for a game-high 74 yards on just five carries and scored a pair of TDs - 45 and 1-yard - in the opening quarter. For his career, Note has rushed 2,069 yards and 36 TDs

Myers here, Myers there: If it seemed like the 5' 11" senior was all over the field making plays on Friday, you wouldn't have been mistaken. Myers returned the opening kickoff 44 yards, rushed six times for 59 yards, scored two TDs and also intercepted a pass along with blocking a punt.

Camire & Scott give glimpse of future: With the game well in hand and the mercy-rule in effect for the second half, a number of backups saw action including two promising running backs - sophomore Brandon Camire and junior Cole Scott - who both scored their first career touchdowns. Camire was the third leading rusher on the night with 54 yards on just five carries, while Scott had three carries for 21 yards.

What's up next: Emmaus will play its road-opener on Friday at 7 p.m. as they travel to Nazareth's Andrew S. Leh Stadium to take on the Blue Eagles who are also 1-0 on the season after posting a 35-7 win at Pocono Mountain East. A year ago, Emmaus and Nazareth hooked up in wild one, combining for 97 points with the Hornets eventually outlasting the Blue Eagles 55-42.
