Hornets sophomore Cox in sixth place after Day 1 of PIAA Championships

Competing in her first-ever PIAA Class 3A golf championship, Emmaus sophomore Michelle Cox is currently in sixth place after the first day of competition on Monday at the Heritage Hills Golf Resort in York.

Cox, the District XI runner-up and the Hornets No. 1 golfer, fired an opening-round of 79 today and currently sits just five shots behind the leader.

Cox opened her round on the back nine with a solid round of 2-over 38 before settling for 5-over 41 on the front. She had 10 pars on the day, one birdie, six bogeys and one double bogey. Cox will begin play on the final day of the tournament Tuesday. at 10:30 a.m.

She is trying to become Emmaus' second medalist in the last three years. In 2016, Sam Fritzinger , currently a sophomore at Wingate University, placed fifth overall with a two-day total of 155 (78-77).

North Allegheny senior Caroline Wrigley leads the field with a 2-over 74. Wrigley finished third a year ago.

Chambersburg's Mark Kate Norcross is one shot back (75), while Uniontown's Danae Rugola is just two shots behind (76). South Fayette's Caroline McConnell and Conestoga's Samantha Yao are both tied for four place after rounds of 6-over 78.

The only other local golfer competing in the girls competition, Stroudsburg's Oliva Patrow, is currently in 15th place after shooting a 12-over 84.

Cox gets revenge on Golden Oaks, qualifies for states after fifth-place effort

After suffering heartbreak a year ago and missing out on advancing to states, Michelle Cox finally got the revenge she's been waiting over a year for.

Emmaus' sophomore golfer carded a 7-over 79 (38-41) and finished in fifth place overall on Monday at PIAA East Region Golf Championships at Golden Oaks Golf Club in Fleetwood, qualifying for next week's PIAA State Championships.

Cox was one of three Emmaus golfers competing at regionals and, unfortunately, the only one to advance as both of her teammates senior Mitch Machulsky and freshman Matt Zerfass missed out on advancing in the boys tournament.

As a freshman a year ago, Cox shot an 89 (45-44) and missed the cut by the smallest of margins - one shot.

One year later, she's now on her way to at Heritage Hills Golf Resort in York, site of next Monday and Tuesday's finals.

Cox is the first female golfer from Emmaus to advance to states since former alums Sam Fritzinger and Belle Keopraseut qualified in 2016. Fritzinger, now a sophomore at Wingate University, finished tied for second with a 75 at states, while Keopraseut was 18th overall with a round of 82

Machulsky and freshman Zerfass, who were both competing in their first-ever regional tournament, missed the cut of 77.

Coming off an amazing performance last week in winning the District XI Individual Championship at Lehigh Country Club, Machulsky carded a 7-over par 79 (40-39) and just missed the cut by two shots.

Zerfass, meanwhile, also missed the cut line finishing with a round of 10-over 82 (39-43)

Hornets face District 12 power LaSalle College HS in subregional Friday.

Fresh off winning its first District XI Class 3A Championship in three years, the Emmaus golf team will now turn its focus towards its next conquest: winning for the first time ever in the subregional tournament.

Head coach Mo Bryan's team will compete in its first subregional tournament since 2015 on Friday when they travel to the Steel Club in Hellertown to take on District 12 champ LaSalle College High School.

LaSalle won the District 12 championship for the second consecutive season on Tuesday, defeating rival St. Joe's Prep 302-321. Junior Steve Lorenzo had the low round of the day firing a 3-over 73 at JC Melrose Country Club. Teammates senior Frank Gregor, junior Griffin Caulfied tied for second with a 75.

LaSalle won its fourth straight Philadelphia Catholic League (PCL) championship and 16th since 2000. A year ago, the team finished fifth at the PIAA State Championships at Heritage Hills.

In its previous two subregional appearances, Emmaus has gone 0-2 falling to St. Joe's Prep both times. In 2015, the Hornets fell 302-319 at Lulu Country Club in Glenside, and in 2014 lost 300-333 at Woodstone Country Club.

The Hornets will send its top five golfers - sophomore Michelle Cox, freshman Aidan LeBlanc, senior Mitch Machuslky, senior Luke Lanzone and freshman Matt Zerfass.

Machulsky is coming off winning his first District XI Class 3A Individual title in a three-hole playoff. Cox finished runner-up in the girls' competition, while Zerfass placed fourth in his first-ever district championship.

Hornets win first District XI Title since 2015; Machulsky captures individual title, freshman Zerfass finishes fourth

After the disappointment of finishing fourth a year ago and having the District XI Class 3A Championships moved from a familiar venue, Lehigh Country Club, to Olde Homestead Golf Club due to weather, the Emmaus golf team had to wait nearly 365 days for another chance.

The long wait was well worth it for head coach Mo Bryan and her young squad.

With overcast skies descending upon the picturesque Par-70 course just off Cedar Crest Boulevard, just minutes from Emmaus High School, the championships went off without a hitch on Monday morning.

And when the final team scores were tallied it was the Hornets wearing the gold around their necks as they edged Eastern Pennsylvania Conference rival Northampton for the team title 315-323, just a week removed from falling to K-Kids in a tiebreaker in the league championship.

"It's pretty awesome. I still can't believe it," said a ecstatic Emmaus  head coach Mo Bryan afterwards. "I'm thrilled and so happy and so proud of these kids of how hard they've worked this season. "

The championship was the first since 2015 for the Hornets and it was their fourth in the last six years, with the other titles coming from 2013-2015 under former head coach Mike Mihalik.

If winning the team title wasn't enough reason to celebrate on the day for Bryan and her squad, the Hornets also were able to enjoy in one of their own having arguably the biggest day of his high school career as senior Mitch Machulsky captured the individual title.

Machulsky, who didn't even compete in last year's championship, defeated Northampton's Andrew Hozza in a three-hole playoff after the two tied for the low round of the day 75. Machulsky won the title on the first hole with a par, while Hozza had a bogey.

"This is honestly the best golf I've ever played in my life," said Machulsky who finished with four birdies on the day (Holes 4, 6, 8 and 12).  "I had a pretty solid season but not  outstanding. There would always be one thing that would be holding me back -putting,  chipping, off the tee - but these last two rounds I've put it all together. It's awesome. I'm thrilled."

Machulsky had all the confidence in the world heading into today after last week's EPC Championships at Woodstone Country Club where he carded a 79 and finished tied for second overall with teammate, Michelle Cox, the team's No. 1 golfer.

"He's so calm and he has the perfect demeanor for a golfer," said Bryan of Machulsky. "I knew he it in him but he could pull it off in the dist championship? I guess it didn't cross my mind that he was goign to win. "

Machulsky becomes Emmaus' first individual boys champion since 2015 when Max Harrington took home the title at Schuylkill Country Club with a 1-over round of 73.

In addition to Machulsky's outstanding effort, the Hornets also got a similar performance from freshman Matt Zerfass who placed fourth overall after posting a season-low score of 77. Competing in his first championship, Zerfass carded a 35 starting on the back nine and a 42 on the front

"He figured it out today," said Bryan of her ninth-grader. " He didn't have a great season but he has just worked on everything and  figured it out. He's doing fantastic and I hope it continues. "

Emmaus' No. 1 golfer, sophomore Michelle Cox, finished second overall in the girls' race despite shooting a season-high round of 82. Cox, who finished third overall at last year's championship with the same score, opened with a 38 on the front nine before struggling on the back with a 44.

"I didn't play well the whole day," said Cox of playing on her home course. "I had some good holes and some bad holes. Hole No. 12 kinda derailed me a little bit, but Olivia (Patrow of Stroudsburg, the individual champion) played really, really well. Even without the struggles I had on No. 12, I don't  i now that i could have beaten her today. "

Cox, Zerfass and Machulsky all qualify for next Monday's PIAA East Regional at Golden Oaks Golf Club in Fleetwood.

Teammates freshman Aiden LeBlanc missed by cut by one shot with an 81, along with senior Luke Lanzone who shot 84.

Next up for Emmaus will be the PIAA Class 3A East Subregional match on Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at The Steel Club in Hellertown. The Hornets will face District 12 power LaSalle College High School. The winner will advance to the PIAA Championships on Wednesday, October 24 at Heritage Hills Golf Resort in York.

Freshman LeBlanc shoots season-low 72, Cox 73 as Hornets beat defending champ Liberty

RECAP -- The Emmaus golf team remained undefeated on the season and posted its biggest win to date Thursday afternoon at Bethlehem Municipal Golf Course as they knocked off defending Eastern Pennsylvania Conference and District XI champion Liberty by 16 strokes 384-400.

"The kids were very excited," said Emmaus third-year head coach Mo Bryan following the match. "There really wasn't much talk prior to the match about what happened last year. We knew Liberty was definitely the better team a year ago."

With the win, the Hornets improved to 11-0 in the EPC and remained one of only two unbeatens in league play along with Northampton. Emmaus and the K-Kids are on a collision course for the EPC regular-season championship when they meet on Thursday, September 13 at Woodstone Country Club.

Freshman Aiden LeBlanc led the Hornets in scoring and posted the second lowest round of the day as he shot a season-best 1-over 72.

"I'm very pleased with how Aiden is playing this season," said Bryan. "He works really hard and enjoys the game. He's a pretty confident kid with a great swing and he's a smart player. He knows what he can and can't do out on the golf course. "

"He gets paired with (No.1) Michelle (Cox) who also played great today and they have a little rivalry between the two of them; they push each other which is good."

Cox, who leads the team with a 73.3 scoring average, fired a 2-over 73 for the third lowest round on the day.

"Her swing is just beautiful," said Bryan of her sophomore standout. "She's such a great kid and joy to watch and she's competing against the males. She's really more confident this season as well."

Besides LeBlanc and Cox, senior Mitch Machulsky also enjoyed a good day with his lowest round of the season -- a 5-over 76. Sophomore Dylan Keopraseut was fourth in scoring with a 81, while freshman Matt Zerfass finished in the top five with a 84.
