Hornets fall to rival Parkland in straight sets in District XI Championship

RECAP -- The 2018 Emmaus girls volleyball team was looking to make history on Thursday night as they were trying to become only the second team in school history to win a District XI Championship.

It had been since 1995 - some 23 years ago - that the last time the Hornets were able to celebrate wearing gold around their necks.

Unfortunately, they'll have to wait even longer for their district title thanks to the program that has been the gold standard in Lehigh Valley volleyball for what seems like the longest time, rival Parkland.

The Trojans, winners of the last four District XI Championships, became just the second team this season to sweep Emmaus in straight sets as they stunned the Hornets 3-0 (25-17, 25-19, 27-25)  in the finals of the District XI Class 4A Tournament held at Catasauqua High School.

It was the fifth straight district title for Parkland and the second win for the Trojans over Emmaus, including handing the Hornets their first league loss back on October 8 in four sets (3-1) in a match held at Parkland.

Emmaus fell behind early in the opening set trailing by as much as 12 points (18-6) before putting together a late rally and dropping Set 1 25-17. Parkland then went on to win Set 2 25-19 and then closed out the championship with a 27-25 win in Set 3.

Junior outside hitter Macy Van Den Elzen led the Emmaus attack on offense with a team-high 20 kills, while sophomore Jaya Bhagat added seven kills to go along with four blocks.

Senior setter Caroline Bond dished out 27 assists and had 12 digs, and defensively, junior Kelsie Baus led the team with 14 digs. Freshman Mia Pickering added six digs and junior Maiah Sabol five. The Hornets were without a key member of the team, senior DS/L Rebecca Dalstad who suffered a concussion in practice on Wednesday.

Parkland got strong play from its front line as senior Grace Steurer had a team-high 14 kills, while classmate Adriana Goetz-Morales was not far behind with 12 kills. Senior setter Brooke Kratzer handed out a game-high 30 assists.

With the District XI playoffs now behind them, the Hornets will now focus their attention on the upcoming PIAA State Tournament which gets underway next Tuesday. Emmaus will draw Garnet Valley, the runner-up from District One, in its opening-round match.

On Thursday night, they'll look to win their second title in the last 23 years.

The top-seeded Green Hornets took care of business on Tuesday night at Catasauqua High School as they punched their ticket to championship night by defeating Liberty in four sets 3-1 (25-21, 18-25, 25-16, 25-15) in the District XI Class 4A Semifinals.

Hornets fall to Nazareth again in the post-season

If you were in attendance at Thursday night's Eastern Pennsylvania Conference semifinal match-up between Emmaus and Nazareth, you can't say that the Hornets didn't have their chances.

They certainly did.

Leading late in both the opening set and in Set 4, in which they needed a win to keep to extend the match, Emmaus couldn't put away a resilient Nazareth team as the Blue Eagles rallied in both and once again got the best of the Hornets in the post-season as they handed them a  3-1 defeat (27-25, 17-25, 25-19, 27-25) at Whitehall High School.

Nazareth, the No. 4 seed, will play for a league championship at Northampton High School on Saturday at 11 a.m. against Parkland, the No. 2 seed, which outlasted sixth-seeded Central Catholic in five sets.

Emmaus, meanwhile, will be off until the start of next week's District XI playoffs following their second loss to Nazareth in a week.

Last night's defeat also marked the second consecutive season that the Hornets have fallen to Nazareth in the EPC playoffs. The Blue Eagles also got the best of Emmaus in last year's District XI playoffs. Both matches went five sets.

"I think the obvious reason is that they (Nazareth) are a pretty good volleyball team," said Emmaus senior setter Caroline Bond on why the Blue Eagles have had the Hornets number in the post-season. "They have a lot of good girls and a good program. When you lose to a team more than once it can get in your head and it's really hard to get out of that mentality. "

Emmaus, the top overall seed, looked like they were on their way to forcing a winner-take-all fifth an deciding set after leading late in Set 4 23-21, but the Blue Eagles rallied to tie it at 25-all before eventually winning the set and the match 27-25. They made a similar comeback in Set 1 rallying for a 27-25 win.

The Blue Eagles were led on offense by hard-hitting senior Maria Harding who had a monster game with 25 kills to go along with 20 digs.

"Maria is very good," said Emmaus head coach Gwen Millets. "She's powerful and dominant and she's everywhere on the court. She does a nice job in the back row and she's a very good player. They have very good players just like we do and I think we are a really good matchup against one another."

Harding's teammate Caroline Walsh added 13 kills and four blocks, while Maddie Orth added 10 kills, 20 digs and a pair of aces. Defensively, Desta Zegeye had a game-high 36 digs and Emily Quinn dished out a game-best 52 assists.

"They played a little bit better than we did tonight," said Millets. " We played really, really well and I'm proud of the girls. We just came out on the short end."

Junior Macy Van Den Elzen reached a milestone in defeat for the Hornets as she recorded 1,000th career kill in the opening set. Van Den Elzen led Emmaus on offense with a team-high 25 kills to go along with seven digs.

"It was a very exciting night." said Millets. "As a junior to reach 1,000 kills is something special. She is really working hard this season and you can see it. She deserves the honor."

Jaya Bhagat, a sophomore, had 10 kills, while another sophomore, Makenzie Krasley, added eight kills and four digs. Defensively, senior Rebecca Dalstad had a team-best 19 digs and junior Kelsie Baus 13. Bond, the league's MVP,  had another solid all-round performance with a team-high 47 assists and 17 digs.

"We're going to come back and work hard at practice and then next week we'll get ready for districts," said Millets.

RECAP - Trailing by five points in the fourth set, the Emmaus girls volleyball team put together an incredible rally to win Set 4 and the match as they spoiled Central Catholic's Senior Night with a 3-1 win over the Vikettes on Monday night at Rockne Hall.

The victory helped Emmaus close out the regular-season as they finished  14-2 in the Eastern Pennyslvania Conference and earned the top overall seed for the upcoming league playoffs. The Hornets also defeated Central Catholic for the second time this season, beating the Vikettes also in four sets (3-1) back on October 3.

Senior setter Caroline Bond, who was named the league's MVP earlier in the day, had a monster night for Emmaus with a game-high 44 assists to go along with 23 digs and three blocks. As the No. 1 seed in the league playoffs, Emmaus will be right back in action on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at home as they host Freedom, the No. 8 seed, in the quarterfinal round. The Hornets swept the Patriots earlier this season 3-0 back on September 20 in a match held at Freedom.

The winner of Emmaus/Freedom will take on the winner of the No. 4 vs No.5 matchup which pits Nazareth against Becahi. The other quarterfinal round games include No. 2 Parkland hosting No.7 Pleasant Valley and No. 3 Liberty at home against No. 6 CCHS.

After the two teams split the opening two sets, Parkland (12-1) was able to pull away late in both the third and fourth sets to pull out the win and earn a little payback for their only league loss of the season after falling to the Hornets 3-2 back on September 6.

Hornets payback Nazareth to remain undefeated on the season

Remembering what happened to them a year ago when Nazareth came to the Emmaus Auxiliary Gym and ended their season in the District XI playoffs, the Hornets got a little sweet payback on their home floor on Tuesday night as they defeated the Blue Eagles in four sets 3-1 (25-20, 25-20, 20-25, 25-23).

Emmaus, which remained unbeaten in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference (3-0) and overall (4-0), received contributions up and down their lineup in the victory.
Junior Macy Van Den Elzen paced the attack with a team-high 20 kills to go along with four blocks. Sophomore Jaya Bhagat added 10 kills, while junior Maiah Sabol and senior Hannah Lingold added five and four kills, respectively to go along with five blocks each.

Senior setter Caroline Bond dished out 40 assists and a team-best 16 digs, while teammate senior Rebecca Dalstad was next with 15 digs. Also making contributions defensively were Junior Kelsie Baus and senior Caley McLaughlin who had 10 and six digs, respectively.

Emmaus took the first two sets by identical 25-20 scores before Nazareth rallied to take Set 3 by the same exact score. The fourth set was a tight one with the Hornets prevailing 25-23.
Emmaus will hit the road for the first time on Wednesday at 7 p.m. as they travel to Whitehall.

Hornets rally for five-set thriller over rival Parkland; Van Den Elzen sets new mark

Down two sets to one to their arch-rival Parkland, the Emmaus girls' volleyball team didn't flinch.

Unfazed by the Trojans rallying to win back-to-back sets to take a 2-1 lead, the Hornets dug in and fought.
And fought, and fought some more until finally, they completed what they set out to do prior to taking the floor Thursday night for this big early-season match: Take down the Trojans.
And that's exactly what Emmaus did -- in dramatic fashion no-less.
Led by the outstanding all-around play from junior outside hitter Macy Van Den Elzen and teammates, the Hornets completed a comeback for the ages inside the hot and steamy auxiliary gym at Emmaus  as they rallied for a wild 3-2 win (25-18, 19-25, 23-25, 25-22, 15-13) over Parkland, the four-time defending District XI champs.
"Our girls have a lot of heart and they know the importance of the Parkland matches during the year for our sport and all the sports here at Emmaus," said 17th year head coach Gwen Millets following the marathon 2-hour, 10-minute match.
"They want to play well and they want to win and they did that today. They didn't let being down two sets to one defeat them. They just kept fighting back, and fighting back every single point. It was such an exciting match to watch."
Emmaus, which improved to 2-0 in the EPC and 3-0 overall, took the opening set 25-18 but saw the Trojans rally to win the next two sets 25-19 and 25-23 and gain the momentum. The Hornets would rally, however, with their backs against the wall as they won Set 4 25-22 and then the fifth-and-deciding set 15-13, setting off a wild celebration.
Besides the comeback, what's more impressive is that Emmaus won its third match in as many days as they opened with 3-0 wins over Northampton (Tuesday) and Solehi (Wednesday) before finishing the week in dramatic fashion with a five-set thriller over Parkland.
"All three of those teams are top teams," said Millets. "We knew coming into the season our schedule is tough with the way its laid out and we knew this first week was going to be one of our toughest weeks and the girls were prepared for that. When the games are here they just bring the energy and they know that they want to defend their home court.
Van Den Elzen, a Penn State commit, was the most dominant player on the court as she led the Emmaus attack with an incredible 35 kills, breaking Alexa Campbell's record of 25 set back in 2008.
"It's been amazing, she's had a great week," said Millets of Van Den Elzen. "If you look in the past of the record-holders at our school just in my head that has to be up there, it just has to be. One fantastic game by Macy. I think everyone pulled together out there to be a part of this victory."
Sophomore outside hitter Jaya Bhagat was second on the team with 12 kills, while senior setter Caroline Bond had an outstanding all-around game with a career-high 47 assists to go along with 16 digs. Senior libero Rebecca Dalstad was solid defensively with 16 digs and sophomore middle hitter Makenzie Krasley had a team-high six blocks.
Emmaus will return to action at 630 p.m. next Tuesday at home when they host another big rival, Nazareth, in a big early-season match. A year ago, the Blue Eagles defeated the Hornets twice in post-season, defeating them in the EPC playoffs and then ending their season in the District XI playoffs with both matches going five sets.
