Ryan shines in Hornets season-ending loss to rival Parkland in district semis
Not even the heroics of Alexa Ryan's play in goal was enough for the Emmaus girls soccer team to avoid yet another loss to their rival Parkland.
The Hornets junior goalie came up with arguably her best effort of the season in the District XI Class 3A semifinals at the Zephyr Sports Complex at Whitehall High School on Thursday, constantly turning away the barrage of shots she faced against a highly-powered Trojans offense.
But the one shot Ryan couldn't save midway through the second half proved to be the difference as Parkland junior forward Ava Schaller scored on a beautifully placed ball from 30 yards out for the game's only goal as the Trojans - once again - ended Emmaus' season in handing the Hornets a 1-0 setback.
Emmaus, which finished the season with a 11-6-2 overall record,, was looking for a return trip back to the district finals and the PIAA State Tournament for a second straight season, but instead, had to settle for their second loss of the season and sixth in the last seven games to their rivals who won their fourth straight title with a 5-1 win over Easton.
Ryan certainly gave her team every opportunity to make a return trip back to the finals.
"Tonight was a perfect example of the way Alexa is in goal.  Parkland has a ton of attacking talent and personnel and in the smallest of spaces they can find a seam and get off a shot," said Emmaus fourth-year head coach Sarah Oswald.
"The play from Alexa tonight was nothing but extraordinary. She's kept us in games all year she gives us moment with big saves and there are a lot of things with Alexa that go unnoticed but not unnoticed by the coaching staff and her teammates."
While Ryan was keeping her team in the game with a number of acrobatic saves, the Hornets offense struggled to generate any kind of offense as they managed just one shot on goal in each half and were held scoreless for the first time in 10 games.
Meanwhile, Parkland spent the majority of the game on Emmaus' end of the field constantly putting pressure on Ryan and the Hornets defense.
"It was lot, but we kept up the defense and we held them for a while, it was just that one ball we let up and they got a goal," said Hornets senior defender co-captain Sarah Smith. "It was a beautiful shot, a beautiful ball right in the top corner."
"She came across our 18 and struck a ball well and kudos to her for being able to find the goal," said Oswald.
For the game, Parkland out shot Emmaus 12-2 and held a commanding 14-4 advantage in corners. Ryan was credited with 11 saves, while sophomore Teresa Gonzalez and junior Zia Reed each stopped one shot for the Trojans.
Emmaus played without junior forward Lily Schmitt who suffered a leg/foot injury in last week's quarterfinal round win over Nazareth. The Hornets were also without two key defenders - juniors Grace Eisenhard and Jada Tha.
"This season was very emotional in a lot ways," said Oswald. "We had some great wins against quality opponents and then some losses that kinda plagued us and put us in difficult situations, but every time this team stepped on the field they gave us everything that they had and they executed the way that we asked and sometimes we just fell short."
Tonight's game marked the final one for Emmaus' seven seniors: Maddie Fey, Sarah Smith, Kellie Reith, Grace Hall, Carly McGrath, Maggie Grant and Allison Stanley.

Emmaus 3, Nazareth 1 (District XI Quarterfinals)

RECAP - A two-week layoff hardly had any effect on Emmaus' quest to advance to the next round of the District XI Class 4A playoffs.

Using a pair of goals from senior co-captain Maddie Fey and a solo score from junior Lindsay Phillips, the Hornets dominated Nazareth after a scoreless tie at the break scoring three goals on their way to a 3-1 win over the Blue Eagles on a cold and chilly Thursday night at Memorial Field.

Emmaus, the No. 4 seed, improved to 11-5-2 overall after defeating the Blue Eagles for the second time in the last three weeks. More importantly, the victory advances head coach Sarah Oswald's team into a semifinal round matchup next Tuesday against arch-rival Parkland, the No. 1 overall seed, which blanked eighth-seeded Liberty 3-0.

Emmaus and Parkland will be meeting for the third time this season with each team winning on its home field. The two teams also met in last year's District XI final with the Trojans prevailing 2-1 in double-overtime. Parkland has won the last three district championships.

In tonight's win over Nazareth, the Hornets had jumped out to a 1-0 lead as Fey scored the first of her two goals in the 48th minute.

Less than four minutes later, junior Lindsay Phillips provided Emmaus with an insurance goal as she found the back of the net with her third goal of the season to to make it 2-0 lead.

Nazareth, which was coming off an impressive run in reaching the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference championship game, was able to cut the Hornets lead to 2-1 as senior Allison Hoff converted a penalty kick in the 71st minute, but Emmaus quickly responded less than five minutes later as Fey scored her second goal of the game and fourth of the season off a crossing pass from teammate senior Kellie Reith.

Both teams each had seven shots on goal in the contest with the Hornets holding a 6-2 advantage in corners. Emmaus junior Alexa Ryan was outstanding in goal coming up with a number of key saves. Her counterpart, senior Caitlyn Lazzarini, was credited with four saves.

Albanese game-winner lifts Hornets to thrilling 3-2 win over CC

RECAP - There was reason for celebration for the Emmaus girls' soccer team on Thursday night at Cedar Crest College following their 3-2 win over Central Catholic.

Unfortunately, that enthusiasm was quickly tempered following another result from around the league that prevented the Hornets from being part of the eight-team Eastern Pennsylvania Conference Tournament.

Needing a win over the Vikettes and help elsewhere, Emmaus took care of business on their end as junior Gianna Albanese provided the game-winning score with just 1:17 showing on the clock breaking a 2-2 tie as the Hornets defeated Central Catholic for the second time this season.

The win improved Emmaus' league mark to 9-5-2, however, Pocono Mountain East defeated rival Pocono Mountain West 2-0, to secure the last playoff spot. The Cardinals finished 10-6 along with Liberty, which is the No. 7 seed.

Emmaus failed to qualify for the EPC playoffs for the first time since 2015. The Hornets still have the upcoming District XI playoffs to prepare for. Currently, Emmaus is the No. 4 seed and would host a quarterfinal round game against fifth-seeded Nazareth.

In the win over Central, Emmaus had taken a 2-1 lead in the 57th minute of the second half as junior Sydney Cole scored her fourth goal of the season, before the Vikings had rallied to tie the game at 2-2. Albanese then provided the game-winner off a corner kick for her fifth goal of the season.

Central Catholic, which needed a win in order to qualify for the District XI playoffs, got a pair of goals from Lizzy Szmigiel. The Vikes dropped to 6-10-1 in the league and 8-10-1 overall.

The Vikes had led 1-0 at the break as Szmigiel scored the first of her two goals with just :17 seconds left in the first half before Emmaus was able to rally and tie the game at 1-1 on junior Maddie McWhinney's fourth goal of the season.

Whitehall 2, Emmaus 1

RECAP - Whitehall's Kate Bonshak singlehandidly spoiled Emmaus' Senior Night and perhaps the Hornets chances of making the post-season playoffs.

The dynamic forward scored a pair of second half goals and the Whitehall defense held Emmaus scoreless after intermission, as the Zephyrs rallied for a 2-1 come-from-behind win over the Hornets on Tuesday night at Memorial Field.

The loss was costly for Emmaus as they are trying to reach the eight-team Eastern Conference playoffs which get underway on Saturday.

The Hornets dropped to 1-3-1 in its last five games after falling to Whitehall for the second time this season. Currently, Emmaus is on the outside of the playoffs after dropping to 8-5-2 in the league, one game behind Pocono Mountain East (9-6) which occupies the final playoff berth.

Emmaus will need to at least win its final regular-season game against Central Catholic on the road Thursday at 8 p.m. get help in order to reach the playoffs for the third consecutive season and for the fourth time in the last five years.

Bonshak, a Virginia Tech commit, scored the game-winning goal in the 63rd minute of the second half on a well-placed long ball from outside of the box that sailed over the outstretched arms of Emmaus junior goalie Alexa Ryan into the back of the net.

Earlier in the second half less than six minutes in, Bonshak had tied the game at 1-1 as she broke loose from an Emmaus defender and fired a shot that Ryan got a hand on but couldn't prevent from going into the goal .

Emmaus had dominated play in the opening 40 minutes and had taken a 1-0 lead with just under six minutes to play in the opening half as Maddie McWhinney scored her third goal of the season off an assist from senior Kellie Reith.

For the game, Emmaus held a slim 6-5 edge in shots on goal with Whitehall taking three corners to none for the Hornets. Ryan made three saves in the game, while her counterpart Grace Clary was credited with five stops.

Prior to the game, Emmaus honored its seven seniors for their contributions to the program: Allison Stanley, Mackenzie Grant, Grace Hall, Carolyn McGrath, Sarah Smith, Maddie Fey and Kellie Reith.

Grant's 'golden' in overtime as Hornets pick up all-important 2-1 win over Nazareth

RECAP - Needing a win to improve its chances of reaching the Eastern Conference playoffs, the Emmaus girls' soccer team did what they had to do on Friday afternoon at home at Memorial Field as they picked up a much-needed 2-1 overtime victory over Nazareth.

Senior Maggie Grant came up with the golden goal in the extra-session as she scored less than four minutes in off a corner kick from teammate Grace Eisenhard. It was the second goal of the season for Grant.

"The goalie tipped it and I was there and I just chested in right in," said Grant following the game. "I was kinda in shock. It was so exciting. It was only only a few minutes into overtime.

"With this win it sealed our fate of getting into the EPC playoffs so it was a really big win for this team."

The overtime was the third of this week for Emmaus which was in desperate need of a win after going 0-2-1 in its last three games. The Hornets were coming off of a 1-1 overtime tie against Pleasant Valley less than 24 hours earlier, and they also dropped a pair of games earlier this week, 3-1 to rival Parkland on Wednesday and a heart-breaking 5-4 overtime loss to Northampton on Monday.

With the victory, Emmaus now improves its league mark to 8-4-2 and their overall record to 9-4-2. The Hornets also got payback from earlier this season when they went to Nazareth on September 7 and suffered a 4-0 setback.

"To be able to end the week that has been very emotional and very physical, in terms of what we've asked our players and what the games have consisted of, the girls dug deep and they were able to find that extra gear that we needed to end this game and reward ourselves with a win through this tough four-game stretch," said a happy Emmaus coach Sarah Oswald.  "I'm really proud of Maggie for being able to be the one to come through their in the overtime and win it for us."

"We talked before heading out that we needed to get the goal quickly. I didn't believe that we had the extra 20 minutes in us based on the week that we had, so being able to capitalize on a goal very quickly into overtime was excellent."

After neither team was able to score in the opening half, Emmaus waisted little time after intermission as they scored less than four minutes into the second half as junior Lily Schmitt found the back of the net with her seventh goal of the season off a corner kick from Eisenhard.

The one-goal lead looked like it would hold up the rest of the way, but unfortunately a questionable foul inside the box ruled against the Hornets allowed Nazareth a penalty kick as the Blue Eagles converted as Allison Hoff tied the game at 1-1 in the 67th minute of play.

The game then headed into overtime where the Hornets eventually won it on Grant's goal.

Emmaus outshot Nazareth 6-4 in the game and held a 7-2 advantage in corners. Hornets goalie Alexa Ryan picked up the win making four saves, while her counterpart senior Caitlyn Lazzarini also made four stops.

The Hornets will return to Memorial Field for their final regular-season home game at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday as they host Whitehall which currently occupies the No. 1 spot in the EPC standings.

Parkland 3, Emmaus 1

RECAP - After defeating Parkland less than a month ago and ending the Trojans' 70-game win streak against District XI opponents, the Emmaus girls' soccer team was looking for a similar performance when the two teams met again on Wednesday night at Parkland High School.

Unfortunately, history didn't repeat itself.

Parkland led from start to finish scoring a pair of goals in the first half, and despite the Hornets best effort for a comeback in the second half, the Trojans were able gain revenge and prevail for a 3-1 win.

The loss was second in the last three days for Emmaus which dropped to 7-4-1 in the EPC and 8-4-1 overall. Parkland, meanwhile, won its eighth straight game to improve to 11-2 in the league and 13-2 overall.

Senior Madison Warminsky scored a goal and added an assist in the win for the Trojans, while teammates sophomore Zoe Schutter and senior Louise Gottwald also found the back of the net.

For Emmaus, sophomore defender Isabella Ingato scored her first goal of the season on a free kick from approximately 40 yards out midway through the second half.

The Hornets will have little time to regroup as they are back on the road on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. as they travel to Pleasant Valley in a makeup game from last week.

Northampton 5, Emmaus 4 (OT)

RECAP - Leading by two goals with under five minutes left to play in regulation on Monday afternoon at Northampton, the Hornets looked in good position to sweep the season-series from K-Kids and, more importantly, start off the biggest week of their regular-season on a positive note.
The home team, however, had other ideas.
Host Northampton was able to rally late in the second half with a pair of goals to force overtime, and then, the K-Kids pulled off the improbable comeback as they scored the game-winner less than three minutes into the extra-session to hand the Hornets a difficult 5-4 defeat.
Isabella Nota wound up scoring the game-winner for the K-Kids who had trailed 4-2 after watching the Hornets scoring three answered goals.
The loss ended a four-game win streak for Emmaus which was unbeaten in its last six games (5-0-1). With the defeat, the Hornets dropped to 7-3-1 in the EPC and 8-3-1 overall. Today's game marked the first of four crucial games this week for head coach Sarah Oswald 's team who must still face Parkland (Wednesday), Pleasant Valley (Thursday) and Nazareth (Friday).
Northampton, meanwhile, won its fourth straight game to even its league mark at 6-6 and overall record at 7-6. The K-Kids also got revenge for a season-opening 1-0 defeat to the Hornets back on September 1.
Northampton had led 1-0 with a goal in the 23rd minute of the first half and carried a 2-1 advantage into the break before Emmaus rallied with three unaswered goals from junior Gianna Albanese (4th of the season), junior Lily Schmitt (6th) and another junior, Shaina Mehrtens (1st) to take what looked like a comfortable 4-2 lead late in the game.
The K-Kids, however, would rally as Abby Czarnecki scored her third goal of the game and Madison Watson also found the back of the net to tie the game at 4-4 forcing overtime before Northampton eventually won it on Nota's goal.
Emmaus will look to bounce back on Wednesday at 7 p.m. as they make the short trip up Cedar Crest Boulevard to meet rival Parkland for the second time this season. The Hornets won the earlier meeting 2-1 back on September 5 snapping the Trojans 70-game win streak against District XI teams.

Smith and Cole score goals as Hornets rally for 2-1 win over CCHS

RECAP - Second half goals from Sarah Smith and Sydney Cole helped Emmaus rally for a 2-1 win over Central Catholic last night at Memorial Field.

Cole, a junior, wound up scoring the game-winning goal - her third of the season -  with a little over 13 minutes remaining in the second half to break a 1-1 tie as the Hornets picked up their fourth straight win and fifth in the last six games, improving to 7-2-1 in the EPC and 8-2-1 overall.

Emmaus had tied the game at 1-1 just five minutes into the second half as Smith, a senior defender, blasted a direct kick from long distance past the outstretched arms of Central Catholic goalie Katherine Gill for her second goal of the season.

The Hornets defense pitched a shutout in the second half in front of junior goalie Alexa Ryan who made three saves in the game.

Central Catholic, which dropped to 5-6 in the league and 7-6 overall, had taken a 1-0 lead in the 28th minute of the first half as Kayleigh Haas scored off a scramble in front of the net following a corner kick.

For the game, both teams managed just four shots on goal with the Vikettes holding a 4-2 edge in corners.

Emmaus will return to action on Monday at 5:30 p.m. as they travel to Northampton to face the K-Kids for the second time this season. The Hornets won the earlier meeting 1-0 back on September 1.

Emmaus 2, Easton 1
RECAP - From game to game in the early part of this high school girls season, Sarah Oswald doesn't know exactly what she's going to get from her team.
Already this season, Emmaus' has knocked off previously-undefeated Parkland 2-1, ending the Trojans 70-game win streak against District XI teams, along with District 3 power Wilson by the same score, snapping a 10-year losing drought against the Bulldogs.
Along with the big wins, the Hornets have also struggled,  opening the season with just a 1-0 win against winless Northampton, and then less than a week later, dropping a disappointing 4-0 loss to a .500 Nazareth team on the road.
So what was the Hornets fourth-year head coach get from her team on Thursday night as they hosted another pre-season favorite in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference, unbeaten Easton at Memorial Field?
How about an effort from her team that had her beaming from ear-to-ear afterwards.
Sparked by junior midfielder Lindsay Phillips goal less than seven minutes into the second half, Emmaus picked up yet another big, early-season win as they knocked off the previously-undefeated Red Rovers 2-1.
"I think this was the best team effort we've had as a whole group defensively, through the midfield and the attack,"  said Oswald. "Tonight was a full performance from our kids and that's not something we've seen from this season. We asked the girls to play the second half the same way that the came out in the first and we were able to get the go-ahead goal.
With the victory, Emmaus improved to 3-2 in the EPC and 4-2 overall, while Easton fell from the ranks of the undefeated dropping to 4-1 both in the league and overall. The Hornets also defeated the Red Rovers for the second straight season, having beaten Easton 1-0 in the District XI semifinals a year ago.
Easton had jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the  34th minute of the first half as senior Caroline Finelli gave the Red Rovers a 1-0 lead with a well-placed goal from approximately 25 yards.
But the Hornets would respond as they got the equalizer just :37 seconds later as junior forward Lily Schmitt scored her first goal of the season off a nice crossing pass from senior Maddie Fey.
Phillips, who scored a second career goal on the varsity, then knocked in the game-winner as she took a free kick from teammate sophomore Isabella Ingato and placed it into the far post past Easton senior goalie Christina Finelli.
Easton applied a lot of pressure in the second half, but Emmaus junior goalie Alexa Ryan stood strong and kept the Red Rovers off the scoreboard. Ryan made five saves in the game, including denying Easton a goal on three successive shots in the opening half.
"There was a lot of pressure there late in the game," said Ryan, who posted her fourth win in goal  "The last 10 minutes I really felt it and it was getting intense but our defense did well and we were able to pull out the win."
"Alexa is always very comfortable with her skill set and what she does," said Oswald. "She's a really great shot-stopper and puts herself in a quality position to cut down angles. As Alexa continues to hold this team in the back it not only builds up her confidence but it gives us all confidence."
For the game, Emmaus out shot Easton 10-6 and held a 7-6 edge in shots on goal. Each team had two corners in the contest.
Emmaus will return to action at 7 p.m. on Saturday as they travel to Freedom (3-2) to take on the Patriots.

Hornets bounce back from first loss of season, defeat Wilson for first time since 2010

Less than 24 hours after suffering its first loss of the season, the Emmaus girls soccer team was back on the pitch Saturday morning starting a new win streak, while also ending a long drought vs a non-league foe from Berks County.
Juniors Gianna Albanese and Grace Eisenhard scored goals within the first 15 minutes of the game, and those two scores stood up the rest of the way as the Hornets handed Wilson its first loss of the season,  2-1 at Memorial Field.
The win was the first against Wilson since April 3, 2010 when Emmaus defeated the Bulldogs 1-0 at West Lawn. The Hornets, who were coming off a 4-0 loss at Nazareth on Friday, improve to 3-1 overall, while Wilson falls to 2-1-1.
Albanese, a forward/midfielder, started the scoring with her first goal of the season in the 8th minute of the first half off an assist from senior Kellie Reith.
Emmaus added to their lead just seven minutes later as Eisenhard, a defender, found the back of the net off a free kick for her second goal of the year.
Wilson was able to cut the Hornets lead to 2-1 with 10 minutes left in the half on a goal from junior Kayla Pennington, but that would be as close as the Bulldogs would get the rest of the way as the Emmaus defense stood tall in the second half.
Emmaus will return to action on Tuesday at 7 p.m. as they travel to the Zephyr Sports Complex to take on undefeated Whitehall (3-0) in a key early-season matchup.

THE STREAK is over !!! Eisenhard and Reith score first half goals as Hornets end Parkland's 70-game EPC win streak
A streak that span 70 games in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference came to an end on a hot and steamy night at Memorial Field on Wednesday as the Emmaus girls' soccer team registered one of its biggest wins in recent history as they knocked off rival Parkland 2-1.
Junior defender Grace Eisenhard and senior forward Kellie Reith both scored their first goals of the season in the first half, and those two scores stood up the rest of the way as the Hornets defeated the Trojans for the first time since a 1-0 win back on September 17, 2013.
With the victory, Emmaus improves to 2-0 on the season, while Parkland, which has won the past four EPC championships, drops to 1-1.
Emmaus jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first half before Parkland was able to cut the deficit to 2-1 on a goal from senior Louise Gottwald with four minutes left. But that would be as close as the Trojans would get as the Hornets 'D' stood tall in the second half.
The Hornets made the most of their opportunities on offense as they scored on two of their three shots on goal. Emmaus also won despite playing without one of its co-captains, senior Maddie Fey, who missed the game with strep throat.
Emmaus will look to carry the momentum from tonight's game into its first road contest of the season at 3:30 p.m. on Friday as they travel to Nazareth.
