RECAP >> Emmaus opened defense of its District XI Class 6A championship with a 5-0 shutout win over Stroudsburg yesterday at Church Lane Park. The shutout was the seventh of the season for the Hornets.
Starting pitcher senior Luke Deschenes was dominant on the mound as he improved to 10-1 on the season after striking out 10 and scattering four hits in 5 2-3 innings of work.
With the victory, the Hornets improve to 20-4 overall and advance to the semifinals at 3 p.m. on Sunday at DeSales University to take on fourth-seeded Nazareth which edged fifth-seeded Northampton 5-4. The game will be a rematch of the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference championship game won by Emmaus 6-5 in 10 innings. The Eastern Pa. Sports Network will provide LIVE coverage beginning at 2:40 p.m.
Senior center fielder Jaden Gallagher went 2-for-4 at the plate and drove in two runs with second home run of the season, a two-run shot in the bottom of the third inning. Deschenes also helped his own cause with a pair of hits and an RBI, while junior left fielder Zack McEllroy went 1-for-2 and also drove in a run.
Stroudsburg, which entered on a five-game win streak, saw its season come to an end at 11-10 overall. Starter Ethan Sodl suffered the loss after giving up five runs on seven hits in 4 2-3 innings.
