RECAP >> An eight-run first inning was more than enough offense for undefeated Emmaus on Tuesday afternoon at Church Lane Park as the Hornets rolled to 13-2 rout over Pleasant Valley in a rematch of last year’s Eastern Pennsylvania Conference championship game.

Senior Luke Deschenes had a big day at the plate as he had a pair of hits and drove in five runs, including his first career grandslam as part of an eight-run first inning for Emmaus, which defeated Pleasant Valley 4-1 a year ago to win its first EPC title since 2006.

With the victory, the Hornets remained unbeaten in both the league (9-0) and overall (11-0).

Senior shortstop Anthony Viola also had a big day as he went 3-for-4 with three RBI, junior Zach McEllroy added a pair of hits and classmate Jackson Merk had his first career home run and drove in two runs.

On the mound, seniors Collin Foley and Tyler LePage combined on a six-hitter. Foley (3-0) went three innings, allowing two runs on four hits before giving way to LePage who held the Bears scoreless the final three innings.

Pleasant Valley, which dropped to 6-3 in the EPC and 8-3 overall, was held to just six hits in the game and committed four errors. Starter Jack Smale was roughed up for 10 runs on seven hits in three innings.

Emmaus will return to action on Thursday at 4 p.m. with a key league matchup as they travel to undefeated Easton (7-0 EPC/8-0 overall).
