RECAP >> Less than 24 hours after coming off an emotional high with its 15-1 rout of Parkland on Tuesday night, the Hornets were faced with a tough task on Wednesday afternoon at home at Church Lane Park facing arguably the EPC’s best pitcher in Noah Gyauch Quirk.

Liberty’s hard-throwing righthander proved every bit a tough matchup for Emmaus hitters as he tossed 6 1/3 innings of scoreless baseball in the Hurricane’s 5-0 shutout over the Hornets. It was the third straight shutout for the Hurricane who improved to 7-1 in the EPC and 7-3 overall.

Gyauch-Quirk limited Emmaus to just four hits in the game while striking out 10. He also helped his own cause at the plate going 2-for-3.

The Hurricane scored the only run they would need in the top of the first inning on catcher Franklin Pichardo’s sacrifice play. Pichardo had a huge day at the plate with four RBI, including a two-run home run to left field in the seventh.

For Emmaus, which dropped to 6-2 in the EPC and 6-6 overall, third baseman Chad Kauffman went 2-for-3.

On the mound, sophomore Jaden Betz suffered the loss, but pitched well in his first career varsity start allowing just two runs on four hits and striking out five in six innings of work.

Emmaus will look to bounce back on Thursday at 4 p.m. as they host Whitehall in their third game in as many days.
