RECAP >> Heading into this high school baseball season, pitching was suppose to be one of the strengths of the Emmaus baseball team.
In the last four games, it has been the pitching – along with the defense – that has first-year coach Jeremy Haas shaking his head.
Five Hornet pitchers combined to walk eight and three defensive errors all aided to Emmaus suffering their worst loss of the season to date on Monday at Church Lane Park, a 14-5 non-league setback to a Central Bucks West team from the Suburban One Conference that went just 3-16 a year ago.
The loss was the second in the last three games for Emmaus which dropped to 5-2 overall. It was also the fourth straight game that an opponent has scored seven or more runs against a Hornets pitching staff that has surrendered 46 runs during that span.
Emmaus never led in the game and trailed 4-0 after two innings and 5-2 heading to the bottom of the fourth before rallying with three runs to tie the game at 5-5.
CB West responded, however, as they put together a six-run fifth inning and then added three more in the seventh to put the game away.
The Bucks (4-3 overall) were led on offense by right fielder Brian Gilvary who had a game-five RBI to go along with two hits. Teammate Matt McCarthy had three hits, three runs scored and two RBI, shortstop Rhys Nicholas went 2-for-5 and left fielder Ryan Rudek drove in a pair of runs
.Emmaus managed only seven hits in the game off four CB West pitchers. Junior right fielder Jude Negron drove in two runs and went 2-for-4 at the plate and senior shortstop Keegan Nytz also had two hits. Senior first baseman Kellan Tulio went 1-for-3 with a RBI and walk.
Junior Jason St. Pierre suffered the loss (0-1) after allowing six runs on four hits in just one inning of work. Freshman Jaden Gallagher made his first career varsity start going three innings.
Freshman Aidan Quinn picked up the win in relief for CB West tossing three scoreless innings in the fifth, six and seventh.
The Hornets will look to bounce back at 4 p.m. on Tuesday when they get back into league play traveling to Stroudsburg.
