It’s not often this season that the Emmaus boys volleyball has been pushed to the five-set limit.
In fact, it hasn’t happened at all.
Until Freedom paid a visit to the Emmaus Auxiliary Gym on Monday night.
The Pates, who entered the match with just a pair of losses in the EPC, were looking to pull off the upset in the Hornets final regular-season home finale on Senior Night.
And they nearly did after dropping the first two sets to even the match at 2-2, forcing a winner-take-all fifth set.
But Emmaus and their six seniors weren’t going to be denied on their special night as they rallied to win Set 5 and the match 3-2 (25-22, 25-19, 24-26, 12-25, 15-11).
With the victory, head coach Jonathan Wilson’s team remained unbeaten in league play as they improved to 11-0 and 14-1 overall. The Hornets also were able to bounce back from their first loss of the season after being swept in straight sets (3-0) by Governor Mifflin last Friday.
Leading the way for Emmaus was senior Lucas Mondin who had a team-high 17 kills and eight digs. Classmate Jackson Holden had eight kills and a team-best 12 digs, while another senior, Jude Boyle, had seven kills and 11 digs. Junior Ben Skekel also had a solid match dishing out 48 assists to go along with 11 digs.
Freedom was led by junior Ayden Willman who had 15 kills and eight digs. Classmate Dylan Shupp had 10 kills and junior MH Ben Soleymani eight. Senior Bailey Fleckenstein dished out 46 assists and had 17 digs. The Pates dropped to 9-3 in the EPC and 16-4 overall.
Prior to the match, Emmaus honored its senior seniors: Jude Boyle, Gabe Dressler, Jackson Holden, Colin Holden, Lucas Mondin and Brayden Dang.
Emmaus will close out its regular-season on Wednesday as they travel up Cedar Crest Boulevard to take on rival Parkland for the second time this season. The Hornets won the first meeting 3-1 (22-25, 25-14, 25-21, 25-21).
