Field Hockey – Early deficit doesn’t faze Hornets as they rally to win sixth straight EPC title with 2-1 victory over Easton.

RECAP >> It’s not often this season that Emmaus has found itself in the position that they were faced with in last night’s Eastern Pennsylvania Conference championship game against Easton.

In fact, it’s only happened one other time — that being the season-opening game back on September 4 at Pocono Mountain East when the Hornets trailed after the Cardinals had scored the first goal of the game in the opening quarter.

But that was the scenario last night at the Zephyr Sports Complex at Whitehall High School as Easton jumped out to a 1-0 lead just 30 seconds into the game on sophomore Jocelyn Morgan’s goal.

The five-time defending champs responded, however, likely they normally do as the Hornets scored a pair of goals in the middle quarters and rallied for a 2-1 come-from-behind win for their sixth straight league title.

Senior defender Kyleigh Faust scored what proved to be the game-winning goal – her ninth on the season – on a penalty stroke with a little under eight minutes remaining in the third quarter to break the 1-1 tie.

The victory improved Emmaus’ overall record to 21-0 overall and it was the third time this season that the Hornets have defeated the Red Rovers.

Junior Abby Burnett also scored in the victory as she scored her 22nd goal on the year to tie the game with a little over five minutes remaining in the second quarter.

Despite only winning by a one-goal margin, Emmaus dominated Easton as they outshot the Red Rovers 29-3 in the game. Sophomore Emma Cari picked up the win in goal for Emmaus with three saves. Her counterpart, sophomore Madison Poplawski, made 16 stops.

Emmaus will now prepare for the upcoming District XI playoffs which get underway next week. The Hornets will be aiming for their 33rd straight title.
