Emmaus took the first step in its quest to win another PIAA State Championship last night at home at Memorial Field as the Hornets rolled to a 5-0 win over Garnet Valley, District One’s sixth place team.
Sophomore Ella Horner scored a pair of goals and assisted on a third to lead the offense, while defensively, Emmaus was once again stout posting their 20th shutout of the season.
The victory advances the Hornets (24-1) to Saturday’s quarterfinal round where they will face Avon Grove, District One’s fifth place team. The game will be played at 2 p.m. at Perkiomen Valley High School.
Emmaus and Garnet Valley were meeting for the second time in six years in the state tournament, and last night’s result was eerily similar to the one back in 2019 when the Hornets rolled to a 6-2 victory.
Just eight minutes into the contest, Horner scored the first of her two goals off a penalty corner to give her team a 1-0 lead. She then later added her second goal with just :44 seconds left in the quarter to push the advantage to 2-0.
Senior Sharlise Solano, who was the hero in the Hornets 1-0 win over rival Parkland in the District XI championship game, pushed the lead to 3-0 less than five minutes into the third, and then three minutes later, Addison Povilaitis made it 4-0 with her 14th goal of the season.
Junior Grace Huffer closed out the scoring just :33 seconds into the fourth quarter off a penalty corner to make the final margin 5-0.
In goal, junior Emily Romano and senior Aiko Price combined on the shutout with Romano making two saves and Price three. Garnet Valley senior Maggie Hilden was busy making 20 saves.
Emmaus dominated not only on the scoreboard but statistically, outshooting the Jaguars 26-5 and holding a 19-5 advantage in penalty corners.
