Emmaus tasted defeat for the first time this season as visiting Downingtown West from the Ches-Mont League and District One came to Memorial Field and handed the Hornets a 2-1 loss in overtime on Saturday morning.
Scarlett Wood, a Michigan State University commit, scored less than two minutes into the 7 v 7 extra session off a penalty corner as the Whippets celebrated the victory, snapping Emmaus’ 15-game win streak. Downingtown West also avenged for last year’s 6-0 loss to the Hornets.
The defeat dropped Emmaus to 15-1 on the season, while the Whippets improved to 10-3.
After a scoreless first quarter, Downingtown West tallied the game’s first goal less than three minutes into the second as Vivienne Quinn, a Ball State commit, scored off a penalty corner.
Emmaus then responded with the equalizer moments later as junior Sadie Nawarynski tied the game with her 10th goal of the season off an assist from senior Sarah Palazzo.
The game remained tied at 1-1 through the second half before the Whippets won it in overtime.
Emmaus outshot Downingtown West in the game 18-13 and held an 11-5 advantage in penalty corners. In goal, junior Emily Romano made nine saves for the Hornets, while her counterpart, Grace Goodman, turned away 17 shots.
The Hornets will look to return to their winning ways on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. as they host rival Parkland (11-1 EPC/13-3 overall) in their final league game of the season. The game will be aired LIVE on The Eastern Pa. Sports Network beginning at 6:15 p.m.
