Field Hockey – Mazzella and Burnett each score first career hat tricks as Hornets roll Nazareth 11-0 in season opener

RECAP >> Senior Liz Mazzella and freshman Abby Burnett each scored their first career hat tricks last Friday afternoon as Emmaus opened its 2019 season with an easy 11-0 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference road win over Nazareth.

The Hornets (1-0) scored early and often in this one putting up six goals in the first half and adding five more in the second as they defeated Nazareth for the second consecutive year to open up the season.

Mazzella and Burnett each scored a pair of goals in the first half and then later completed their hat tricks with solo scores in the second.

Sophomore Lexi Kociban added a pair of goals in the win, while junior Annika Herbine had a team-high three assists to go along with her first goal of the season. Sophomore Maddie Huffer also scored her first career varsity goal in the second half to close out the scoring for the Hornets.

Emmaus dominated in shots (52-1) and in penalty corners (20-1) in the game.

Junior Bailey Tietz and senior Victoria Rivera combined on the shutout in goal.

Emmaus will return to action on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. as they host Whitehall in their home opener at Memorial Field. The Hornets will also travel to Allen at 6:15 p.m. on Thursday before closing out the week at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday with a road contest at Bethlehem Catholic.
