Field Hockey – No thriller this time as Hornets roll to 8-0 win over CB East in rematch of last year’s state semifinal

RECAP >> A year ago, Emmaus was faced with a number of challenges when they traveled to Central Bucks East High School to take on the Patriots in the PIAA Class 3A state semifinals.

Frigid conditions. Wind. And going against a CB East squad which was enjoying a historic season.

Luckily, the Hornets were able to overcome all of that as Kyleigh Faust’s goal early in the fourth quarter sent Emmaus past the hosts 1-0 and on to winning the program’s 13th state title.

Yesterday, when the two teams met again at the same venue, the Hornets made sure there would be no sudden and dramatic victory.

Using a four-goal effort from junior Ava Zerfass, Emmaus controlled play from the opening whistle as the Hornets rolled to a convincing 8-0 win over the Patriots from the Suburban One Conference. The win was the 996th overall for legendary head coach Sue Butz-Stavin.

Emmaus (9-0 overall) scored three goals in the opening period and dominated statistically, outshooting CB East 29-1 and holding a 10-0 advantage in penalty corners.

Junior Rachel Herbine added a pair of goals in the win – Nos. 98 and 99 of her career – and sophomore Haley Kvacky and senior Lexi Kociban also scored. Junior Abby Burnett had a game-high two assists. In goal, sophomore Emma Cari posted the shutout.

The Hornets will return to league action tonight at 6:30 p.m. as they host Allen.
