Field hockey rolls to its sixth straight win behind Baughman and Herbine

RECAP – Senior Riley Baughman and sophomore Annika Herbine each scored four goals as Emmaus scored early and often in easily defeating Hazleton 12-0 in a non-league game on Saturday morning at Memorial Field.
The victory and the shutout was the sixth straight for the Hornets who improved to 6-0 overall on the season. Emmaus has now outscored its first six opponents by an incredible 75-0 margin. It was also the second time in the last three years that Emmaus’ has defeated Hazleton, beating the Cougars by the same 12-0 score in 2016.
Baughman, who had a 10-point game (4 goals/2 assists) did all of her scoring in the first half as she her scored the game’s first three goals in the first 10 minutes as the Hornets jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead. She later added her fourth goal midway through the half.
Herbine, the team’s leading goal scorer (11 goals) also did all of her scoring in the opening half, including finding the back of the cage with three of her team’s four goals to close out the half as Emmaus built a commanding 10-0 lead.
Also in the win, senior Kayla Kisthardt scored her 7th goal of the season, sophomore Mackenzie Bruns recorded her 3rd goal, while freshmen Alexis Kociban (No.2) and Brooke Mancini (No. 7) both scored in the second half to close out the scoring. Senior Kacie Patton had two assists.
The Hornets held a commanding advantage in shots on goal (28-1) and penalty corners (16-0). Senior goalie Claire Nielsen wasn’t tested in the game and gave way to sophomore Bailey Tietz who made one save in the last 14 minutes of the game.
Emmaus is back on the road next week as they travel to Stroudsburg to face the Mounties at 4 p.m. on Tuesday.
