RECAP >> Junior Brandon Camire scored three touchdowns, including a key 63-yard punt return, as Emmaus built a 17-point lead early in the fourth quarter and then held on at the end late for 31-28 win over Liberty on Mentor Night Friday at East Penn School District Stadium.

Camire, who finished with 185 yards on a career-high 27 carries, also scored on runs of 91 and 1 yard as he pushed his touchdown season total to 19. He’s just four yards short now of going over 1,000 yards for the season.

The win moved the Hornets to 4-2 overall on the season as they rebounded from last week’s difficult one-point loss at Easton. They also defeated Liberty for the fifth straight time dating back to the 2016 season.

Senior Jack Ogutu also had a big night as he caught his first career touchdown pass, a 50-yard strike from junior Jacob Moyer on the final play of the third quarter to give Emmaus a 24-14 lead.

Defensively, sophomore Jared Groller and junior Chad Newhard led the Hornets with six tackles each, while senior Adam Heiserman and classmate Kamron Bertie were next with five.

Liberty, which dropped its fourth straight game, fell to 2-4 on the season. Senior quarterback Dallas Holmes threw two fourth-quarter touchdown passes and junior Jaiden Canada also scored three times, including a 20-yard reception from Holmes with 1:22 left in regulation for the final scoring of the night that got the Hurricane to within 31-28.

Emmaus will return to East Penn School District Stadium next Friday at 7 p.m. as they host rival Central Catholic on Homecoming. The game will be carried live on Penn Sports Radio beginning with the pregame show at 6:30 p.m.

Quotes:

Coach Fairclough: “We needed this win in the worst way. It was a tough one last week at Easton, so we needed this to bounce back and we did and now we are on to the next one.”

On Brandon Camire: “He’s special. He makes plays when we need him to. He’s just flat out good and the crazy thing is he can be even better. I’m happy for him. He’s having a great year.”

On Jack Ogutu: “That play was huge. (Jacob) Moyer did a great job of fitting it in right there. Jack made a heck of play not going down and finishing it. He came up huge for us tonight and I’m happy for him. He’s the energy guy for our team.”
