A streak that dates all the way back to 1997 continued on Friday night for Emmaus in its dominance over Dieruff.
And this result, was very similar to those of the past.
It was that kind of night for head coach Harold Fairclough’s team who spoiled the Huskies homecoming night.
Playing in its second game in the last three weeks at J. Birney Crum Stadium, the Hornets overwhelmed Dieruff as seven different players scored touchdowns in the Hornets 54-0 rout.
Emmaus, which has not lost to Dieruff in 27 years, scored touchdowns on all but two possessions on the night as they jumped out to a 27-0 lead at the end of the first quarter, 48-0 at the break, and enforced the mercy-rule the entire second half.
The 54 points and eight touchdowns on the night were a season-high for the Hornets who won their third straight game and matched their win total from a year ago as they improved to 6-2.
Senior running back Reilly Bechtel had a pair of scores on runs of 19 and 43 yards, junior quarterback Jerek Cooper passed for two touchdowns and the Emmaus defense posted its first shutout of the season as they forced four turnovers, two of which went for touchdowns.
Senior free safety Zach Stephens and junior defensive lineman Robert Edwards both had their first career touchdowns on interceptions. Stephens picked off a pass a Jack Herter pass in the first quarter and returned it 50 yards for the score, and Edwards, the team’s leading tackler, also had a moment he’ll never forget as he raced 37 yards for a touchdown. Junior lineman Brody McHugh also had an interception on the final play of the first half that he nearly took back for a third touchdown.
Cooper, who finished 5 of 8 for 76 yards in just one half of action, hooked up with junior Cole Moreau on a 60-yard touchdown pass and then later found another junior, Kai Jefferson-Rushing, on a 22-yard scoring strike. Junior Peter Sherman took over at quarterback in the third quarter and sophomore Mason Lenig also saw his first career varsity action under center in the fourth.
Sophomore running back Anthony Attar scored the only points in the second half with his first career touchdown on a 43-yard scamper in the fourth quarter.
Dieruff, which was off to its best start since 1992 with a 4-0 record, suffered its fourth straight defeat as they fell to 4-4. The Huskies were shutout for the second time.
Emmaus will return to J. Birney Crum Stadium next Friday at 7 p.m. as they take on Allen.
