Playing at home for the first time in the new year, Emmaus picked up a key EPC victory last night at ‘The Hive’ as the Hornets led from start to finish in defeating Stroudsburg 46-37.

Heading into the contest, Emmaus had trailed the Mountaineers by a game in the league standings as top eight teams will qualify for the post-season playoffs. But the nine-point win by head coach Kelsey Gallagher’s team could go a long way in helping the Hornets chances as both teams are now 4-3 with Emmaus holding the tie-breaker.

In the victory, no player reached double figures for only the second time this season, but the Hornets (5-6) did have a balanced scoring attack with nine different players figuring into the scoring column.

Sophomores Gabby DeVita and Olive Whitney led the offensive attack with each scoring nine points. DeVita scored seven of her nine in the third quarter, while Whitney came off the bench and provided a spark with three 3-pointers. Both were named SportClips Co-Players of the Game on The Eastern Pa. Sports Network’s LIVE coverage.

Bench points proved pivotal in the victory for the Hornets as they outscored Stroudsburg 24-8. Besides Whitney’s nine, junior Sylvia Sokolofski also played well scoring seven points, while classmate Emma Naccarato, who was making her first start of the season, had a number of key rebounds late in the game.

Stroudsburg (6-5 overall) was led in scoring by junior McKayla Strunk who scored nine of her game-high 11 points in the second half. Seniors Ella Henritzy and Zoe Brown added nine and seven points, respectively.

Emmaus will return to action on Monday when they host rival Parkland at 7 p.m.
