Girls Basketball – Emmaus hangs with state-ranked and undefeated Easton for a half, then offense goes cold as Red Rovers pull away for 55-33 win

RECAP >> Emmaus put a scare into the state’s No.4 ranked team in Class 6A, undefeated Easton for the first half of last night’s game at home at ‘The Hive’, but the Red Rovers proved to be too much after halftime as they rolled to a 55-33 win spoiling the Hornets upset bid.

Head coach Kelsey Gallagher’s team, which entered play with seven league wins – the most by an Emmaus team since the 2016-17 season – played inspired in the first two quarters as they went toe-to-toe battling Easton to a 23-all tie at intermission.

But the second half was a different story as the Hornets went cold on the offensive end and were limited to just two field goals while being outscored 32-10. Emmaus was also hurt with turnovers, committing 10 in the second half and 21 for the game.

Easton junior Anye Staton had a monster game as she scored 12 of her game-high 20 points after halftime to lead the Red Rovers who improved to 8-0 in the EPC and 12-0 overall. Senior Sara Tamoun added 12 points in the win, while classmate Makenna Zimmerman chipped in 10.

Emmaus, which dropped to 7-3 in the league and 9-5 overall, was paced by senior Sarah Hoch who scored seven of her team-high 10 points in the first half. The Hornets need just one more league win or two wins in their last eight games to qualify for the District XI Tournament.

Emmaus will be back in action on Friday at 7 p.m. as they travel to Rockne Hall to take on Central Catholic (8-1 EPC, 11-2 overall).
