Girls Basketball – Emmaus once again goes toe-to-toe with one of the EPC’s elite as they battle Central Catholic before falling late to Vikettes 38-33 in regular-season finale; Despite loss, Hornets still have chance to make league tournament

RECAP >> For the second time in three days Emmaus battled one of the top teams in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference in Central Catholic, a team that had won 12 of its last 14 games.

And like its hard-fought matchup in a two-point loss to arch-rival Parkland on Saturday, the Hornets once again battled for most of the game.

Unfortunately, the end result proved to be the same as the Vikettes spoiled Emmaus’ final regular-season home game as they handed the Hornets a 38-33 defeat on Monday night at ‘The Hive.’

Central Catholic, which had defeated Emmaus earlier this season by a 17-point margin (41-24), had its hands full all night long but they were able to pull away late for the victory and earn the season sweep of the Hornets.

In the win, senior Julia Roth who accounted for more than half of her team’s offense finishing with a game-high 20 points, 13 coming in the first half for the Vikettes who improved to 13-3 in the EPC and 17-4 overall.

Emmaus was led in scoring by sophomore Taylor Griffith who provided a spark off the bench with three 3-pointers and a team-high eight points – all in the fourth quarter. Junior Paige Inman also added eight for the Hornets who dropped to 12-10 overall and 8-8 in the EPC. Emmaus went just 2-4 in its final six games.

In the league standings, East Stroudsburg South occupies the final playoff spot with an 8-7 record, but the Cavaliers still must play undefeated Easton tonight. Emmaus owns the tiebreaker over East Stroudsburg South defeating them earlier this season, 48-29.

Whitehall, Pleasant Valley and Freedom are all 7-8 in the league and have one game remaining. The Hornets split with Whitehall and defeated both Pleasant Valley and Freedom. The official EPC matchups will be announced on Wednesday.
