After getting off to one of its best starts in program history in winning eight of its first nine games, things have been going in the opposite direction lately for the Emmaus girls basketball team.
The Hornets suffered though their first winless week of the season which wrapped up this afternoon at home at ‘The Hive’ in a 43-37 non-league loss to Schuylkill League foe Blue Mountain.
The defeat marked an 0-3 week for head coach Kelsey Gallagher’s team which was coming off a disappointing 29-point loss (57-28) to Central Catholic less than 24 hours earlier and a five-point defeat (45-40) on Tuesday to unbeaten Easton in a game in which Emmaus trailed 18-0 midway thru the second quarter before putting together an incredible late-game rally that got them to within one possession.
Emmaus is now 10-7 overall on the season (7-4 EPC) after dropping four straight and six of their last eight games. They still need just one win in their final five games to clinch a berth in districts.
In today’s loss to a Blue Mountain team which entered 13-3 but was coming off of a 28-point loss to rival North Schuylkill on Thursday, the Hornets got off to a fast start as they built a nine-point lead at halftime (27-18).
The second half, however, was a different story as Emmaus struggled offensively as they were just 2 of 16 from the field after being outscored 25-10. The Hornets also hurt themselves from the free-throw line where they were just 9 of 19 (46 percent) and they also committed 19 turnovers in the game.
In the loss, freshman Gabby De Vita and junior Taylor Griffith each scored nine points, all coming in the first half.
Blue Mountain, which snapped a four-game losing streak to Emmaus, had three players reach double figures in the win. Junior Kylie Conway led all scorers with a game-high 13 points, while classmate Emily Heydt and senior Ava Peel each added 11.
In Friday night’s loss to Central Catholic, the Hornets fell behind early and were never able to recover as they managed just seven points after haltime in posting its second lowest offensive output of the season.
De Vita led Emmaus with 10 points in the loss.
The Vikettes were paced by junior Molly Driscoll who scored a game-high 22 points. Classmate Sammy Roth added 14 for the winners who improved to 9-2 in the EPC and 14-3 overall.
Emmaus will look to get back into the win column on Tuesday as they return to Eastern Pennsylvania Conference action traveling to Northampton at 7 p.m. The two teams met earlier this season with the Hornets winning 46-40.
