Having already faced and beaten a much-improved Dieruff team once this season by seven points, Emmaus certainly expected another competitive matchup when the two teams got together last night at ‘The Hive.’
It never happened.
Not on the Hornets Senior Night.
Facing a Huskies squad with 14 wins on their resume and riding high coming off a historic win over Central Catholic last week, Emmaus wasn’t about to let the visitors celebrate the same success on their special night as they got off to a fast start and never let up in cruising to 64-42 win in a turnover-marred game.
The Hornets won their 16th straight game as they improved to 19-1 overall and 14-0 in the EPC. The 19 wins is the most for the program since the 2006-07 season. Emmaus also all but clinched the No. 1 seed for the upcoming league tournament, which gets underway on Friday, February 9.
As they’ve done all season, the Hornets once again had a balanced scoring attack with four players reaching double figures.
Junior Gabby DeVita, the team’s leading scorer, paced all scorers with a game-high 22 points, 20 of which came in the second half. Senior Cassie Doemling added 14, while sophomore Kayla Snyder had 10 and senior Sylvia Sokolofski also added a season-high 10 for the Hornets who outscored Dieruff in all four quarters.
Dieruff was led in scoring by junior Aniyah Holder who had a team-high 14 points. Classmates Justyce McChristian and Jayla Rosario added 13 points and nine, respectively, for the Huskies (9-5 EPC/14-6 overall).
There were a combined 47 turnovers in the game — Dieruff (26) and Emmaus (21).
Prior to the game, Emmaus honored its four seniors along with their parents – Cassie Doemling, Sofie Laird, Sylvia Sokolofski and Emma Naccarato.
The Hornets will be back in action at 7 p.m. on Thursday as they host rival Parkland (12-2 EPC/14-6 overall). LIVE audio coverage will be provided by The Eastern Pa. Sports Network beginning at 6:45 p.m.
