Girls Lacrosse – Cote’s 7 first half goals more than enough for Hornets as they roll past Hazleton 19-1 in district opener; Freedom awaits in semis

RECAP >> Junior Julia Cote had her second highest scoring output of the season last night at Memorial Field as she scored seven goals in leading Emmaus to an easy 19-1 win over Hazleton in the quarterfinal round of the District XI Class 3A playoffs.

With the victory, advances Emmaus (17-2 overall) to Monday’s semifinal round at 6 p.m. back at Memorial Field against a familiar foe in Freedom, which overwhelmed Delaware Valley 27-1. The Hornets and Patriots have already met twice this season with Emmaus coming out on top in both meetings — 11-7 and 11-6. Live coverage of the game will be provided on The Eastern Pa Sports Network (www.easternpasportsnetwork.com).

Cote, who entered the game with 72 goals on the season, scored all seven of her goals in the first half as Emmaus raced out to a 14-0 lead at the break. Her 79 goals ties her with former Hornet Destanee Watkins ’16 for the most goals in a single season in program history.

Sophomore Emily Hollinger also had a big game in the win with a six-point night with three goals to go along with three assists. Freshman Jordyn Poll registered her fourth hat trick of the season, junior Mikayla Viola added a pair of goals and senior Ally Shaffer, the team-leader with assists, had three more on the night to add to her total to go along with her 21st goal.

Hazleton’s lone score of the game came in the second half courtesy of Riley Hudock.
