RECAP >>  To say that the Emmaus girls’ lacrosse team hasn’t had much success in defeating Berks County’s Wilson would be an understatement.

Only once in the last 12 years – a span of seven games between the two schools – have the Hornets found themselves on the winning end, that coming back in 2010 when they defeated the Bulldogs at home 8-4.

On Saturday morning, when the two renewed their rivalry in West Lawn, it looked like history would repeat itself as the District 3 power held Emmaus to just one goal in the first half in building a 5-1 advantage at the break.

But despite that four-goal deficit, this version of Emmaus girls lacrosse wasn’t about to once again fall victim to the past.

Facing its largest deficit of the season, on the road no less, the Hornets were able to put together an incredible comeback as they outscored the hosts 7-2 in the second half on their way to a dramatic 8-7 win.

Senior Mikayla Viola wound up scoring the game-winner – her second of the game off an assist from sophomore Olivia Schmidt – with 4:34 left in regulation to give Emmaus the win and keep them unbeaten on the season as they improved to 4-0 overall.

Senior Julia Cote once again had a huge game for the Hornets in the win with a six-point effort (4 goals/2 assists) to lead the offense. Schmidt also scored in the victory as did junior Emily Hollinger. Sophomore Melea Weber dished out a game-high two assists and in goal sophomore Alani Shotwell gave up just a pair of goals after the break to earn the victory.

Wilson, which dropped to 1-2, was led in scoring by senior Kayla Wilkes who had a hat trick, including her 100th career goal to give her team a 5-1 lead. The Bulldogs played the final 17 minutes of the game a player down.

Emmaus will return to action on Monday at 6:30 p.m. as they host PAC 10 foe Pottsgrove in a non-league game.
