Girls Lacrosse – No comeback this time as Cote and Hornets roll to 18-2 win over Freedom in rematch of last year’s District XI game

RECAP >> Julia Cote and her Emmaus teammates remember the feeling of walking off Memorial Field last season in the District XI Class 3A semifinals.

The opponent, Freedom, who fell behind 6-0 lead to start the game, stunned the Hornets and rallied for a 9-8 come-from-behind win ending the season for Emmaus.

That feeling a year later still stings and in the only regular-season meeting between the two schools last night at the same venue, Cote and company made sure there would no repeat performance by the Patriots.

Cote recorded her 200th career point scoring a game-high five goals and two assists as part of her seven-point night and six different players figured into the scoring column as the Hornets dismantled Freedom 18-2 handing the Patriots their first loss in league play.

The game was broadcasted LIVE on www.easternpasportsnetwork.com.

Emmaus, which had defeated Freedom twice last year during the regular-season, broke away from a 2-2 tie with 12:51 left to play in the first half and scored 16 unanswered goals as they improved to 5-1 in the EPC and 11-1 overall. Freedom dropped to 4-1 in the league and 8-2 overall.

Junior Emily Hollinger had a six-point night with four goals and two assists, while sophomores Olivia Schmidt and Jordyn Poll each recorded a hat trick. In goal, sophomore Alani Shotwell made seven stops and didn’t allow a goal in the last 37 minutes of the game.

Freedom, which was playing without its leading scorer junior Paige Telatovich (ACL injury), was led in scoring by junior Paige Jenkins and senior Jada Carter who each scored one goal. Freshman Arianna O’Keefe was credited with 11 saves in net.

Emmaus will return to action at 2 p.m. today as they travel to Southern Lehigh to take on the Spartans in a non-league contest. The game is part of the Battle Lax, an annual cancer charity event which will benefit the Pancreatic Cancer Hope Foundation and the HEADstrong Foundation.
