Playing on the road at Wilson Saturday morning, Emmaus battled the perennial Berks County power to a very competitive first half, trailing by just a goal at the intermission, 9-8.
After the break, however, it was a different story for the Hornets as the Bulldogs scored five of the game’s next six goals on their way to a 14-9 victory.
“It was a great first half of lacrosse,” said Emmaus coach Roxann Betz. “In the second half we just had too many mental mistakes. I also think the difference was their depth off the bench and keeping fresh legs. They are an extremely fast and talented team.”
Wilson, having reached the District 3 championship and the PIAA state playoffs a year ago, was led in scoring by junior Mattie Keiser who accounted for six goals on the day. Senior Alexa Kairis had a hat trick, while classmate Audrey Miller added two goals and an assist for the Bulldogs, who won their third straight game in improving to 3-1 on the season.
For Emmaus, which dropped to 2-3, senior Bri McClain led the way with three goals. Another senior, Olivia Schmidt, added a goal and two assists, while classmate Jordyn Poll and junior Abby DiComes each added a goal an an assist. In goal, senior Alani Shotwell was a standout player for the Hornets making 18 saves.
Emmaus will return to league action on Wednesday, April 3 at 4 p.m. as they travel to Freedom (1-2 overall).
