Girls Tennis – A pair of Hornets doubles teams claim Gold, another Silver at EPC Tournament.

RECAP >> It was a banner day for the Emmaus girls tennis team at the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference Tournament held last Friday at Freedom High School.

All three doubles teams placed high with the No. 3 and No. 4 taking Gold, while No. 2 took Silver.

At. No. 3 Doubles, sophomores Natalie Hillegass and Brooke DiGiacomo, who took first place a year ago at No. 4 Doubles, once again claimed top honors for the second consecutive season as they defeated the top seed Sonia Lee and Kate Gilchrist of Parkland.

The duo was down 9-6 in the finals and then won three games and the tiebreaker to claim the championship.

On their way to winning the title, Hillegass and DiGiacomo defeated Alana Gould and Manjot Sandhu of Nazareth 8-7 after trailing 7-2 and also beat Julianna Vo and Shelbi Calligari of Stroudsburg 11-10.

At No. 4 Doubles, second-seeded senior Kylie Gleason and junior Anshi Kanani won Gold knocking off top-seeded Belle Mattson and Riley Zangari of Parkland in the finals 10-6.

The tandem defeated No.7 seed Alayna Issa and Polina Dorman of Liberty 8-0 and No. 6 seed Diya Soman and Eleanore Hornbake of Easton 10-4.

Senior Malena Stetz and sophomore Gabriela Tranguch, the Hornets No 2 Doubles, also had a nice run in the tournament finishing runner-up. They defeated Ella Combi and Bridget Kane of Easton 8-3 and then avenged for a regular-season loss to Liberty’s Abigail Mayes and Katie Bruno of Liberty by defeating the tandem 10-8 before falling to Parkland’s Aarohi Vaze and Kiana Miles of Parkland in the finals 10-6.

In Singles competition, all three of the Hornets top three players lost in their opening-round matches.

At No. 1, junior Sophia Kaufman lost to top-seeded Helena Lynn of Liberty 8-0; At No. 2, senior Ashlyn Phy fell to Parkland’s Sophie Elijovich of Parkland 8-3; and at No. 3, senior Ava Grace Saab was ousted in the first round to Stroudsburg’s Vasoula Skarlis.

Both Kaufman and Phy competed at yesterday’s District XI Singles Tournament and dropped their first-round matches.
