In an early-season showdown between two of the top teams in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference, it was state-ranked Bethlehem Catholic defeating the Hornets Monday night inside ‘The Hive’ at Emmaus High School.

The Golden Hawks, led by former Emmaus coach Jess Attieh, swept the match in straight sets 3-0 (25-18, 25-19, 25-22) to remain unbeaten on the season at 5-0 while handing the Hornets their first loss (5-1).

In defeat, Emmaus senior setter Alyssa Heffner reached a personal milestone with her 1,000th career assist. Heffner finished the night with 29 assists to go along with three aces.

Senior outside hitter Amanda Rivera led the Hornets offense with 10 kills to go along with nine digs and three aces. Teammate, junior MB Rosalia Landino, added eight kills. Defensively, senior DS Corrine Sliva had a team-high 15 digs.

Becahi was led by junior Jocelyn Bell who had 12 kills to go along with eight digs and two blocks. Senior Sophia Bedics was next with nine kills and 11 digs while classmate Theresa Ruhl had eight kills. Junior Piper Ruggiero dished out 28 assists to go along with nine digs and two aces and junior Maddy Ahner had a team-best 12 digs for the Golden Hawks.

The Hornets looked to bounce back yesterday as they hosted East Stroudsburg South.
