A nearly four-hour, 170-mile round trip north to Milford, Pa. was well worth it on Tuesday night for the Hornets to put their names into the program’s record books.
Facing District 2 champion Delaware Valley on its home floor in the opening round of the PIAA Class 3A State Tournament, Emmaus made history by picking up their first ever win in states as they swept the Warriors in straight sets 3-0.
The victory advances the Hornets (21-4) to Saturday’s quarterfinals where they will face District One champ and unbeaten Spring-Ford, who defeated Upper Dublin 3-1. The match will be held at 3 p.m. at Central Bucks South High School in Warrington.
Emmaus, which last appeared in states back in 2019 and 2018, scored the final three points of the first set to win 25-22 and then took the next two sets with relative ease, winning 25-16 and 25-13.
Senior Amanda Rivera had an outstanding all around match with a team-leading 11 kills and 13 digs, including the 500th dig of her career. Junior Rosie Landino and sophomore Fiona Answini both had eight kills and four digs.
Two other seniors – Corrine Slivka and Sophia Freemont – each had 12 digs, while classmate Alyssa Heffner handed out 33 assists.
Delaware Valley was coming off of winning its 16th straight District 2 championship. The Warriors ended their season at 14-5.
