The Emmaus girls wrestling team had a strong showing at the Souderton Big Red Girls Individual Tournament this past weekend as they finished third overall amongst 40 teams competing.
“It was a solid two days all across the lineup,” said first year head coach Anthony Shave. “We had five medalists and another three wrestlers just one match away from medaling.”
Senior Olivya Kroope (155) was the Hornets top place winner as she advanced to the finals before suffering her first loss of the season, 9-6 in sudden victory to freshman Hayden Manning of Abington Heights. Kroope (20-1) went 3-1 in the tournament recording three first period pins.
Kroope’s teammate, junior Ariana Koberlein, also had a big tournament with 4-1 record and a third-place finish at 148.
“Ariana perhaps had the strongest performance knocking off a state qualifier in her third-place bout,” said Shave of Koberlein’s 7-0 win over William Tennant senior Meghan Gottschall.
Ariana’s sister, Brynn Koberlein, also had a strong showing finishing fourth at 136.
Freshman Nitzana Jamaica (100) and junior Petra Perez (190) were also medalists placing sixth in their respective weight classes.
Junior Danielle Rivera (112), sophomore Haily Laible (142) and senior Jocelyn Vargas (170) were all one win from medaling.
Neshaminy won the team race with 157.5 points. The host school, Souderton, finished runner-up (145.5 points), followed by Emmaus (141), Owen J. Roberts (fourth/138.5) and Upper Dublin (fifth/128).
The Hornets will return to action on Sunday, January 18 as they travel to the Lebanon Tournament.
