Girls Soccer – Emmaus 2, CCHS 1
At Memorial Field on Saturday afternoon, an early one goal deficit didn’t faze the visiting Hornets playing on their home turf as they picked up their biggest win to date.
After watching Central Catholic jump out to a 1-0 lead in the 8th minute on a goal by junior Charlotte Patterson off a corner kick, Emmaus was able to rally with a strong second half as they scored a pair goals in knocking off the defending Eastern Pennsylvania Conference champions.
Junior Lizzie Bender wound up scoring the game-winner in the 72nd minute, her second of the season, as the Hornets remained unbeaten in league play at 3-0, while improving to 4-1 overall.
Another junior, Sophia Shutkufksi, picked the perfect time to score her first goal of the season as she blasted a shot from just outside the 18 past Viking junior goalie Maeve McGee in the 57th minute to tie the game at 1-1.
In goal, senior Sadie Wallace picked up the win turning away four of the five shots she faced.
Emmaus coach Chris Hain post-game on The Eastern Pa. Sports Network: “We just kept fighting all day. We knew we didn’t give our best effort in the first half, and we knew we needed to change some things in the second half to be able to compete with them. They made it really hard for us in the first half and credit to them.
“I didn’t have to remind the girls before the game of what happened last year when we lost to them in the EPC semifinals (4-3). They knew, we didn’t have to touch on it too much. You know what kind of game you are going to get when you play Central. They play the game that way it’s supposed to be played. They play hard and play physical. I thought today at times we matched their physicality, especially in the second half.”
