Smith and Cole score goals as Hornets rally for 2-1 win over CCHS

RECAP – Second half goals from Sarah Smith and Sydney Cole helped Emmaus rally for a 2-1 win over Central Catholic last night at Memorial Field.

Cole, a junior, wound up scoring the game-winning goal – her third of the season –  with a little over 13 minutes remaining in the second half to break a 1-1 tie as the Hornets picked up their fourth straight win and fifth in the last six games, improving to 7-2-1 in the EPC and 8-2-1 overall.

Emmaus had tied the game at 1-1 just five minutes into the second half as Smith, a senior defender, blasted a direct kick from long distance past the outstretched arms of Central Catholic goalie Katherine Gill for her second goal of the season.

The Hornets defense pitched a shutout in the second half in front of junior goalie Alexa Ryan who made three saves in the game.

Central Catholic, which dropped to 5-6 in the league and 7-6 overall, had taken a 1-0 lead in the 28th minute of the first half as Kayleigh Haas scored off a scramble in front of the net following a corner kick.

For the game, both teams managed just four shots on goal with the Vikettes holding a 4-2 edge in corners.

Emmaus will return to action on Monday at 5:30 p.m. as they travel to Northampton to face the K-Kids for the second time this season. The Hornets won the earlier meeting 1-0 back on September 1.
