RECAP >> Twice this season Emmaus and Whitehall have treated their fans to two classic nine-inning games.
On April 2, it was the Hornets rallying for a 3-2 win at Kiwanis Field on Shayla Morgan’s game-winning hit.
Last night, in the second meeting between the two teams at Pates Park in Allentown before a near-capacity crowd, Emmaus wasn’t as fortunate as they had their nine-game win streak snapped as the Zephyrs pull off an incredible comeback.
Whitehall freshman Bella Muth blasted a grandslam to right centerfield in the bottom of the ninth inning off reliever Kamryn Tokar as the Zephyrs stunned the Hornets with a 9-6, 2-hour and 40-minute marathon.
Emmaus, which was coming off arguably its biggest win of the season – a 9-3 victory Tuesday over previously-undefeated Northampton – had taken a 6-4 lead with a pair of runs in the top of the ninth, but the Hornets couldn’t hold the lead as the Zephyrs scored five runs.
The loss dropped Emmaus to 14-3 overall and 11-2 in the EPC, while Whitehall won for the sixth time in the last seven games to improve to 9-3 in the league and 12-3 overall.
In a losing effort, junior catcher Mason Roselli had two hits and drove in two RBI and senior first baseman Lindsey Moreau had a two-run home run in the seventh for the Hornets. Starting pitcher junior Danika Barthol went eight strong innings, giving up four runs on seven hits and striking out 12 in her 159-pitch effort. Tokar suffered her first loss in relief.
For Whitehall, Muth drove in five runs in the game, while second baseman Emma Bonshak, third baseman Kate Yadush and pitcher Kassie Aquino each had two hits for the Zephyrs, who won despite committing six errors in the game.
Emmaus will return to action on Tuesday at 4 p.m. as they host Allen at Kiwanis Field.
