Softball – Hornets make early exit from EPC Tournament after committing five errors in 4-2 loss to Pleasant Valley

RECAP >> Errors proved problematic for Emmaus on Monday in its EPC quarterfinal round matchup with Pleasant Valley and as a result, it meant an early exit from the tournament for the Hornets.

Riding an eight-game win streak, earning the No. 2 seed and playing at home at Williams Street Field, Emmaus committed five errors on the afternoon and the seventh-seeded Bears took advantage of the Hornets miscues by pulling off the first-round 4-2 upset win.

The loss was the first for the Hornets (17-4 overall) since suffering a 12-4 defeat on April 17 to Liberty and it marked the second consecutive season that Emmaus had been eliminated in the opening round of the league playoffs (a season ago, it was 5-1 loss to Northampton.)

Pleasant Valley, which went on to defeat Parkland in the semifinals yesterday, did all their scoring in one inning plating four runs in the top of the fifth. The Bears improved to 15-6 on the season.

Leadoff hitter and left fielder Hailey Krock led the offensive attack going 3-for-4 with two doubles, while center fielder Lydia Borger added two hits for PV, which had 10 hits in the game.

In the circle, junior Kailyn Getz picked up the win going the distance while allowing just two runs and scattering nine hits.

For Emmaus, which had led only once in the game (1-0 after four innings), junior second baseman Sadie Haefeli, sophomore catcher Abby Derr and senior pitcher Autumn Held each had two hits.

Held suffered the loss on the mound for the Hornets. The right-hander gave up all four runs (two earned) on 10 hits while striking out five and not walking a batter.

Up next for Emmaus will be the District XI Class 6A Tournament, which gets underway on Thursday, May 23.
