Editor’s Note: Over the next weeks and months, Emmaussports.com will be spotlighting senior spring sports student-athletes at Emmaus High School who have had their final athletic year cancelled due to the Coronavirus pandemic.
Today we spotlight Miguel Abadilla (MA) of the boys volleyball team with our Q & A session:
Q: How are you coping during these difficult and uncertain times with the Coronavirus pandemic?
MA: I just try to keep myself busy throughout this whole thing. I’ll do anything I can to kill time everyday, but it sometimes does get really hard to not get bored. As long as I’m staying active, the days go by just a little bit faster.
Q: What’s been the biggest challenge for you day to day?
MA: I’d say the separation from my friends. Before this, I spent almost all my free time with my friends and the change was so sudden. In the beginning of quarantine I really didn’t know what to do with my time and would just stay in bed for most of the day.
Q: What are you doing to keep busy?
MA: I do my best to keep up with my studies and prepare for my freshman year of college. Besides that, I go on a lot of walks and have been watching tons of shows and movies. Not a lot going on in the Abadilla household.
Q: Now that the spring sports season has been cancelled, how disappointed are you?
MA: I was very sad when I realized there was no chance of having this final season. I feel as though we were robbed from seeing the final payoff that my fellow senior teammates and I have been pushing towards for the past three seasons. I would have liked to have seen what the team could have done this year, since I see how hard everyone has worked everyday. It is what it is, definitely not the final season I was expecting.
Q: What will be your favorite memory from your high school sports career?
MA: {Teammate} Noah Szankovics getting a citation for wearing a coconut bra is my only memory from Emmaus volleyball.
Q: What are you future plans after high school? If college, what school have you committed to and do you plan on playing sports and what will be your major?
MA: After high school, I will be attending Penn State for Computer Engineering. Unfortunately, getting on the men’s team does not seem too promising, but I definitely intend to keep playing recreationally.
What’s the best advice you can give to your underclassmen?
MA: For underclassmen, I guess I’d say to just remember to have fun. It’s easy to get carried away and to have a mindset of getting something done to move on to the next thing, but then you miss out on the enjoyment you can find in the work you’re doing or the people there with you.
