Wrestling – Bechtel, Brynn Koberlein and Laible all secure key victories as Hornets beat Northampton 42-33

Emmaus snapped a streak of three straight EPC dual losses by earning a thrilling 42-33 win over Northampton last night inside the school’s auxiliary gym.

The Hornets won seven of the 13 bouts and earned bonus points in all of those matches as they evened their league mark at 5-5 and 7-6 overall.

“I thought Erin Bechtel was key to the win, along with Brynn Koberlein’s willingness to drop to 130 to fill in for an injured Sarah Luisi and get a key fall,” said first year head coach Thad Smith. “Haily Laible also wrestled a very good and controlled match to secure the win.”

Bechtel, a freshman, earned a second period pin over junior Gabriel Chevere at 124, while Koberlein, a sophomore, did the same with a fall of sophomore Allison Rounsaville at 130. Laible, another freshman, then clinched the dual with a first period pin over sophomore Lilliana Brader at 148.

Northampton fell to 6-5 in the EPC and 11-6 overall with the loss

Over the weekend, the Hornets competed in the Panther Brawl at Strath Haven High School where they finished runner-up.

Freshman Peyton Schneck (100), junior Olivya Kroope (155) and senior Katherine Soto-Acuna (235) all won their respective individual weight classes.

Laible and junior Jocelyn Vargas (170) both placed third, while senior Shadeilyz Castro-Ruiz (106), sophomore Kadence Yannotti (136) and sophomore Ariana Koberlein (142) finished fourth.

Parkland won the team title with 227.5 points, followed by Emmaus, CB East, Catasauqua and East Stroudsburg South.

The Hornets will return to action on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. as they travel to Palisades for a non-league matchup.
