Wrestling – Despite 0-3 start to season, Best still likes the fight his young wrestlers are showing following 41-15 loss to unbeaten Easton.

RECAP >> Emmaus faced an uphill battle on Wednesday night facing undefeated Easton as the Red Rovers won all but four of the 13 matches in rolling to a 41-15 victory over the Hornets at Easton’s 25th Street Gymnasium.

The loss dropped Emmaus to 0-3 on the season, but head coach Jim Best still likes the fight his young team is showing.

“Overall, the coaches continue to be pleased with the “battle” that this team has wrestled with in the last two duals,” said Best, the Hornets second year coach. “Some technical flaws have been exposed and we will continue to work on fixing those in the practice room, but the effort of our wrestlers cannot be questioned. They are giving the effort that the coaches are asking for, and in some cases, they are going above and beyond.”

Freshman Emilio Albanese (107) remained undefeated on the season (7-0) winning the headline match of the night with his 8-6 sudden victory overtime win over fellow freshman Noah Fenner. It was the second time that the two had met with Albanese also defeating Fenner 10-7 at the Top Hat Tournament.

“Emilio showed a tremendous amount of poise and determination to come from behind and get a second win this season over a quality opponent,” said Best. “As did his older brother Marco (now at Binghamton University) Emilio displays a “never say quit” attitude, and he continues to improve his skill set and match awareness with each passing week.”

Another freshman, Teagan Caciolo (127) also picked up his seventh win of the season (7-2) with a 5-2 decision over Easton senior Ben Riehl.

“Teagan is as tough and gritty as they come,” said Best. “He was wrestling up a weight class for the benefit of the team, fell behind early in his match, and continued to make adjustments until he found the opportunity to score a reversal and back points for the victory.  Teagan continually analyzes his wrestling and looks for opportunities to improve and adjust.”

Junior Jesse Scott (160) won a hard-fought 3-2 decision over Quentine Hammerstone to improve to 6-3 on the season and fellow junior Massimo Tranguch (189) registered his team’s only pin of the night, decking Shae Linegar in just :49 seconds. Tranguch is 5-2 on the year.

“Jesse remained patient throughout his match with another quality opponent,'” said Best. ” He stuck to a game plan and set up an opportunity to score a winning takedown late in the match. Jesse’s hard work in the practice room is paying off in competition.

“Massimo is improving on a weekly basis. He is receptive to the coaching he receives in the practice room, and his pin over a quality opponent from Easton displayed his improvement.”

The Hornets will return to action after the holiday break when they compete at the Hurricane Invite at Liberty High School on December 28 and 29.
