Emmaus dropped its season-opener on Wednesday night in Bethlehem falling to the state’s No.1 ranked team according to Pa. Power Wrestling, Bethlehem Catholic 43-14.
The Golden Hawks, winners of the last three PIAA Class 3A state dual team championships, won 10 of the 13 bouts and scored bonus points in all but three of those matches.
For Emmaus, sophomore Emilio Albanese, ranked No.1 pre-season at 114, was impressive in his debut as he rolled to a 21-3 technical fall over freshman Andre Cerrato. Albanese was 39-6 a year ago and finished fourth at states.
Teammate, junior Logan Roth, also picked up a win at 285 with a 5-1 victory over sophomore James Bozzi, while sophomore Lexi Max, who was also making his varsity debut, picked up a forfeit win at 121.
In the highest scoring match of the night, Hornets senior Chance Henry lost to sophomore Mason Thomas 18-15 at 145.
Next up for the Hornets will be a trip to Williamsport this Friday to compete in the Top Hat Tournament.
