RECAP — The Emmaus wrestling team went 1-1 in the District XI Class 3A Team Championships held last night at Liberty’s Memorial Gymnasium.
Competing in the tournament for the first time since the 2016-17 season, the ninth-seeded Hornets won a thrilling 31-25 decision over eighth-seeded Freedom in its opening-round match before falling to top seed Liberty 64-7 in the quarterfinals.
Head coach Thad Smith’s squad now drops into the elimination round at 9 a.m. on Saturday when they take on the No. 4 seed Stroudsburg at Freedom High School. The Mounties fell to fifth-seeded Nazareth 57-12 in their quarterfinal round matchup.
In its opening-round match, Emmaus defeated Freedom for the first time in three meetings and for the second time in the in the last four years in the district duals by winning eight of the 14 bouts.
The match was tied at 25-all after 13 bouts, but the Pates forfeited at heavyweight as the Hornets rallied for the win.
Emmaus won five of the last eight bouts getting wins from seniors Jackson Karrat (145), freshman Jared Groller (152), sophomore Conner Carter (170), junior Caden Wright (182) and sophomore James Santichen (285).
Karrat and Groller both went 2-0 on the night picking up wins in the loss to Liberty the state’s No.2 ranked team. The Hurricane also defeated the Hornets in a dual meet during the regular-season 60-12.
Saturday’s semifinals at 10:45 a.m. will pit No. 1 Liberty vs No. 5 Nazareth and No. 2. Bethlehem Catholic vs No. 3 Northampton. The same four teams met a year ago in the semifinals.
