Emmaus opened up the home portion of its schedule last night by picking up its first EPC win with a 66-5 rout over East Stroudsburg South
The Hornets won 12 of the 13 bouts and recorded bonus points in 10 of the matches with seven by pin, including the final six matches.
“I told my team prior to starting that we wanted to prove to ourselves tonight that we are fundamentally sound from a technical perspective, well-conditioned and that we’re going to wrestle with grit and attitude, and I think we showed that tonight throughout the match,” said Emmaus coach Jim Best. “ES South is a scrappy team and I told my guys be ready, you are going to have earn your points and I think we were ready and we earned those points.”
The dual started at 152 pounds with junior Logan Armstrong rolling up a 17-2 technical fall over Arian Dubinsky. Senior Jesse Scott (160) and junior Xayden Sallit (172) also followed with tech fall victories: Scott defeating William Thomas 17-2 and Sallit cruising to a 25-9 victory over Ivan Laubach.
In the upper weights, senior Ashir Choudhry picked up 4-2 decision over Elias Smida, while teammate Logan Roth pinned Chris Perez in 4:42.
“Ashir has worked so hard in the off season and you can see the physical change in him,” said Best. “He battled tonight and to see him get a win is just really gratifying for us as coaches and even more gratifying for him.”
Sophomores Emilio Albanese (114), Levi Max (121), Teagan Caciolo (127) and Tommy Fallstich (133), along with freshman Xyler Sallit (139) and senior Chance Henry (145) all recorded pins in the final six bouts of the night.
“Tommy had an eighth-place finish at the Top Hat Tournament and I think that has just helped him with his confidence and his belief in his abilities,” said Best. “As coaches we’ve seen that improvement in the practice room.
“With Chance, I have to credit coach (Omar) Haddad for working with him relentlessly. Not only on improvement from a technical perspective, but just that wrestling awareness on the mat and he’s got some confidence now and he’s starting to improve. I think we’re going to continue to see improvement from Chance as the season progresses. He works hard.”
East Stroudsburg’s South lone victory of the night came at 215 where Josiah Rodriguez won by tech fall (17-2) over senior Nicholas Irizarry who was making his varsity debut. The Cavaliers dropped to 0-2 on the season.
Emmaus will return to action at 9 a.m. on Saturday as they compete at the Blue Raider Duals at Tamaqua High School.
