Wrestling – Hornets use a total team effort in defeating Liberty for the second straight season 37-24.

Wins against Liberty have been few and far between for the Emmaus wrestling program over the years.

In fact, only twice in program history have the Hornets come out on the winning end against the Hurricane.

Make it now three times and twice in the past two years.

Head coach Jim Best young squad went on the road last night and earned yet another big dual meet win as they defeated Liberty 37-24.

The Hornets, who have now won three of their last four duals, picked up wins in eight of the 13 bouts with several wrestlers coming up with key victories.

“Tonight’s win was a team effort,” said Best, the Hornets second year coach. “We are at the point where each wrestler understands their individual role in the outcome of a close dual, like the one we had this evening.

“They understand that in a winning effort, it is important to wrestle for bonus points, and even in a losing individual effort, it is crucial to minimize damage and give up as few team points as they can. When a team has those types of collective efforts by each individual, the desired outcome becomes consistently attainable.”

Juniors Jesse Scott (172) and Massimo Tranguch (189) got the match started with consecutive pins giving Emmaus and early 12-0 lead.

Liberty was able to rally with two pins of their own with junior Dante Morrison (215) and senior Seth Kolb (285) recording falls to tie the match before the Hornets went on to win five of the next six bouts in building a 31-15 lead.

Freshmen Logan Maher (107), Emilio Albanese (114) and Teagan Caciolo (127) along with sophomores Aiden Bayard (133) and Logan Armstrong (139) all picked up victories.

In the final bout of the night, sophomore Xayden Sallit put an exclamation point on the win with a fall over Wesley Koch in 5:38.

Emmaus will return to action tonight at 7 p.m. as they host Whitehall (7-2 EPC/15-2 overall) on Youth Night. The match will be streamed LIVE on The Eastern Pa. Sports Network’s YouTube channel beginning at 6:45 p.m.
