Playing Berks County power Wilson West Lawn has proven to be a challenge for Emmaus over the years.
Since the two teams started playing each other back in 2013, the Hornets have never been able to defeat the Bulldogs.
Last year at West Lawn, Emmaus took Wilson to overtime before falling 11-10.
Yesterday at Memorial Field, the unbeaten Hornets once again found themselves in a familiar position with a similar result.
Playing from behind the entire game, Emmaus was able to rally and outscore Wilson 3-1 in the fourth quarter to once again force overtime.
But in the double extra session, it was the Bulldogs who were once again able to come out on the winning end as they handed the Hornets their first loss of the season, 9-8 in double overtime.
Senior Cohen Renninger, who scored the game-winner a year ago, wound up being the hero once again for Wilson, which improved to 2-2 on the season.
Renninger had a big game in leading the Bulldogs, scoring four goals and adding two assists. Junior Trey Marcinko added a pair of scores, while classmate Carter Brensinger dished out a game-high three assists.
For Emmaus, which dropped to 4-1 on the season, senior Will Barber once again carried the offense with his third six-goal performance of the season. The St. Joseph’s University commit has already amassed 27 goals in just five games.
Junior Jewlien Torres and senior Michael Chies also scored goals in the loss, while senior goalie Sam Rainford was busy making 18 saves.
Emmaus will return to action on Wednesday as they host two-time defending District XI champion Freedom at 6:30 p.m. The game will be aired LIVE on The Eastern Pa. Sports Network beginning at 6:15 p.m.
