Softball – Hornets come out swinging with a 16-run first inning, make quick work of Central Catholic in rolling to a 17-0 victory

An 11-day layoff from game action had little affect on Emmaus’ bats on Friday afternoon at Pates Park in Allentown as the Hornets made quick work of Central Catholic, rolling to an easy 17-0 win in a game that was halted in the third inning due to the 15-run rule.

After having to deal with five straight postponements due to the weather and not having played since a 20-1 rout of Allen on March 25, Emmaus came out swinging in the top of the first inning sending 20 batters to the plate and scoring 16 runs.

On the day, Emmaus pounded out 11 hits off of two Central Catholic pitchers in game that lasted just a little over an hour.

Sophomore designated player Abby Derr had the big hit in the first inning with a three-run, inside-the-park home run, her third of the season. Senior leftfielder Taylor Bruckler also had three RBI with a bases-clearing double, while sophomore centerfielder Taylor Hauver added two hits and two RBI.

Senior and starting pitcher Autum Held helped her own cause with two hits in the first inning, including a triple and two RBI. In the circle, Held limited the Vikettes to just a pair of hits while striking out five.

The win was the third straight for the Hornets who improved to 4-2 on the season, while Central Catholic dropped to 1-3.

Emmaus will return home to Williams Street tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning with Governor Mifflin at 11 a.m. followed by East Stroudsburg North at 12:45 p.m.
