It didn’t take long for Emmaus to establish its dominance against District 2 champ Wyoming Valley West on Saturday morning in the second round of the PIAA Class 3A State Tournament at Nazareth’s Andrew S. Leh Stadium.

Less than six minutes into the game, the Hornets were off and running as they scored the first of what proved to be many goals on the day as they rolled to a 7-1 win over the Spartans.

Five different players figured into the scoring column for Emmaus, which was facing Wyoming Valley West for the first time since a 12-1 rout back in 2016. The two teams also met two years prior with the Hornets winning 3-1 in the state quarterfinals.

Junior Emmy Horner and senior Melea Weber paced the offense with each scoring a pair of goals in the victory, while seniors Autumn Held and Haley Kvacky along with sophomore Sharlise Solano added solo tallies.

Emmaus, which was coming off of a much more difficult 3-2 overtime win in its state opener against Methacton on Tuesday, won its 17th straight game as they improved to 24-1 overall.

Wyoming Valley West ended their season at 11-8 overall. The Spartans were coming off a 2-1 opening-round win over Boyertown and their first District 2 title since 2019. Senior Olivia Yelen, a Northeastern University commit, scored the lone goal of the game in the third quarter off a penalty corner from her sister, freshman Charlotte Yelen. The seven goals allowed were the most since a season-opening 8-2 loss to Lower Dauphin.

For the game, Emmaus outshot WVW 21-1 and outcornered the Warriors 20-3. In goal, senior Emma Cari picked up the win, while her counterpart, freshman Kaylah Sewell, made 12 stops.

Up next for the Hornets will be a semifinal date at 6 p.m. on Tuesday at Hamburg High School against the defending state champs, District 3’s Lower Dauphin who handed Conestoga, the District One champs, their first loss of the season with a 2-1 overtime victory. The game will be aired LIVE on The Eastern Pa. Sports Network beginning with the pregame show at 5:40 p.m.

Emmaus and Lower Dauphin last met two years ago in the state finals with the Hornets winning 1-0.
