After pair of excruciating defeats the past two weeks, Emmaus finally found an opponent to take its frustrations out on.
They also made some history in doing so.
Facing a one-win Dieruff team that had been giving up 40 plus points per game in their defeats, the Hornets, as expected, were able to snap their two-game losing streak last Thursday night at J. Birney Crum Stadium as they rolled to a 42-0 rout of the Huskies.
Coming off of back-to-back heartbreaking losses against both Central Catholic (17-14) and Whitehall (28-27), Emmaus scored early and often as they improved to 3-5 on the season, while also picking up the program’s 500th career victory.
Senior running back Jay Santos had a career night on the ground for the Hornets rushing for 200 yards and three touchdowns (2, 4 and 52 yards) as Emmaus built a comfortable 27-0 lead at the half. The lead grew to 35-0 in the third quarter with the mercy rule kicking in.
Junior quarterback Kellen Hafner was 8 of 11 in the game and hooked up with senior Jamaad Sanders on a 11-yard TD pass in the second quarter, the first touchdown reception on the season for Sanders.
Anthony Attar got the scoring started with a 5-yard TD run on the opening drive of the night, and freshman Anderson Lenig capped the scoring with his second career TD, a 10-yard run in the fourth quarter.
Emmaus put up over 300 total yards in the game — 275 on the ground.
Dieruff, meanwhile managed just 52 total yards in the game (34 rushing/18 passing). The Huskies suffered their fifth straight loss as they dropped to 1-7 on the season.
Defensively, Sanders was the leading tackler for Emmaus with five on the night. AJ Kaintz was next with four.
Emmaus returns back to J. Birney Crum Stadium for the third time this season on Friday at 7 p.m. as they take on Allen (3-5). Currently, the Hornets are in the No. 8 position in the latest District XI 6A rankings with the top eight qualifying. The Canaries are also battling for a playoff spot, 10th in the rankings.
