Girls Basketball – Hornets let eight-point lead slip away late as Liberty uses big fourth quarter to rally for 34-31 win

1/12/19

Recap — Looking to pickup its first league win of the season, Emmaus was in perfect position to do so on Friday at Liberty’s Memorial Gymnasium as they led the Hurricane by eight points with a little over three minutes remaining in regulation.

But it wasn’t meant to be for the Hornets as they couldn’t maintain the lead and watched as Liberty stormed back and rallied for a 34-31 win.

Emmaus was outscored 16-5 in the fourth quarter as they suffered their fourth straight loss and remained winless in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference at 0-8 (2-10 overall).

The Hornets had one last shot to take the lead as they trailed by one (32-31) with under five seconds to play, but Emmaus turned the ball over on the inbounds pass and Liberty converted a pair of free throws for the final margin.

Sophomore Gabrielle Martin led all scorers with a season-high 12 points for the Hornets.

Liberty, which improved to 2-6 in the EPC and 3-8 overall, was paced by junior Kathryn Wescoe who had a team-high 11 points.

Emmaus will have to regroup quickly as they’ll be back on the court at 2:30 p.m. today hosting Reading (9-2) in a non-league game at ‘The Hive.’
