Emmaus sophomore Zoe Santana continued her outstanding season by capturing her first-ever singles championship on Thursday at the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference Tournament held at Freedom High School.

Santana, the top seed and undefeated on the season, defeated Parkland’s Sadie Pollard, the No. 3 seed, 10-4 in the championship match.

On her way to winning the title, Santana also beat Nazareth’s Lydia Moyer, the No. 8 seed, in the quarterfinals and fifth seeded Elizabeth Trott of Pocono Mountain East.

The Hornets tandem of junior Emily Kaufman and senior Riya Patel also claimed gold at No. 4 doubles defeating top seeded Mehek Garg and Sophie Law of Parkland 10-9 in a seven-point tiebreaker.

At No. 3 singles, senior Brooke DiGiacomo had a nice showing by advancing to the championship before settling for a runner-up finish to CCHS Giada Montone, the top seed. DiGiacomo knocked off second-seeded Kiana Miles of Parkland 10-8 in the semifinals

Emmaus’ No. 2 doubles and the top seed, seniors Katy Kapp and Nat Hillegass also reached the finals before falling to Julia Janis and Michaela Durie of CCHS 10-8.

At No. 3 doubles, the Hornets tandem of seniors Fiona Harvey and Avary Puliatte, the top seed, lost in the finals to Central Catholic’s Carly Eisenhard and Charlotte Hood in a tiebreaker.

Senior Gabby Tranguch, the Hornets No. 2 singles player, lost her first round match to Nazareth’s Alexa Grzenda in a matchup of the No. 4 vs No. 5 seed

Central Catholic wound up capturing the team title with 24 points. Emmaus and rival Parkland finished runner-up with 22 points.

Up next for the Hornets will be the District XI 3A Singles Tournament, which gets underway on Monday at Freedom High School. Santana will be the top seed and face Maddie Reeder of Stroudsburg. Tranguch will also face a Mountaineer in her matchup vs sixth-seeded Ava Marsh while DiGiacomo will take on Liberty’s Corrine Mumma, the No. 7 seed. The tournament shifts to Lehigh University for the semifinals and finals on Wednesday.
