Golf – Zerfass ties for low-round at District XI qualifier; teammates Keba, Wong and Seidel also make cut

October 1, 2019

RECAP >> What a difference a week has made for Matt Zerfass.

After posting his highest score of the season at last week’s Eastern Pennsylvania Conference (EPC) Tournament at Olde Homestead Golf Course in New Tripoli, the Emmaus sophomore completely turned things around at the same course.

Competing against 37 other golfers looking to qualify for next week’s District XI Tournament, Zerfass shared top honors with Parkland’s Sam Mortazavi as both fired rounds of 1-over 73.

Zerfass, who shot a season-high 11-over 83 last week, shot a 2-over 38 on the front nine and a 1-under 35 on the back nine with three birdies and 12 pars on the day.

The performance by Zerfass capped off an incredible 24-hour stretch of golf as he also won the Lehigh Valley Junior Amateur championship at Green Pond Country Club defeating Liberty’s Joey Altemose 4 & 3 in the finals.

Teammates freshman John Keba and junior Colin Wong both shot 82 and qualified along with junior Nate Seidel who made the cut by one shot with an 87. Junior Sean Jaeger missed the cut by two shots with an 89.

Emmaus will look to defend its team title from a year ago at next Monday’s District XI Class 3A championship at the Steel Club in Hellertown. The other teams competing include Blue Mountain, Nazareth and Liberty.
