RIFLE – Hornets qualify for state tournament defeating Berwick 996-994 in third-place match; Junior Caleb Reiss fires top score 200-16x.

The Emmaus rifle team qualified for the PIAA Championships last Thursday at their home range at Unami, edging Berwick 996-994 in the third place match of the Northeast Pennsylvania Rifle League (NEPARL).

Junior Caleb Reiss was the top shooter for head coach Michael Schuler’s team firing a 200-16x. Teammate senior Emma Ramos was next with 199-19x followed by junior Matt Purinton (199-17x), sophomore Cassidy Yard (199-15x) and senior Jeff Alexander (199-13x).

Berwick was led by Shane Levan who had the top score of the match with a 200-18x.

East Stroudsburg South won the league championship defeating Southern Lehigh 999-997 in the finals. Both teams, along with the Hornets, advance to the state tournament which begins on February 21. Emmaus had won the past two NEPARL Championships.

Before competing at states, Emmaus will compete in the state individual competition which is set for tomorrow, Tuesday, February 12 at 1 p.m. in Hellertown.
