Ten days after being upset by Pleasant Valley in the opening-round of the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference Tournament, Emmaus had a little payback to give to the Bears when the two teams met again yesterday at Williams Street Field in the District XI Class 6A quarterfinals.
The second-seeded Hornets got the revenge they wanted as they banged out 10 hits in the game and behind solid pitching in the circle from both senior Autumn Held and freshman Mari Eiswerth routed seventh-seeded Pleasant Valley 9-2.
Emmaus (18-4) now advances to the semifinals for the third consecutive year where they will face a familiar foe in third-seeded Liberty, which edged sixth-seeded Stroudsburg 3-1. The game will be played on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. at Pates Park. The Eastern Pa. Sports Network will provide LIVE coverage beginning at 4:15 p.m. Liberty won the first meeting between the two teams 12-4.
Senior shortstop Bri Amey led the Hornets offensive attack in the win with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate. Catcher sophomore Abby Derr had two doubles and drove in two runs, while senior left fielder Taylor Bruckler also had a pair of hits.
Held picked up the win on the mound allowing just one run on two hits in five innings before giving away to Eiswerth who pitched the final two innings.
Pleasant Valley, which had reached the EPC championship game before losing to Nazareth 12-2, managed only four hits in the game. Starting pitcher Kailyn Getz was touched up for nine runs on nine hits in four innings.
